I've been looking for a catback for quite a while and finally decided to go custom. There are about a million threads here on H-T comparing the sounds of different systems. I didn't have much trouble chosing my header because there seemed to be a consensus as to which one was best for my set up, but, unfortunately, there are a lot of conflicting opinions about the cat back. So I've decided that I need to learn more about the basic concepts of exhaust systems so that I can make a valid judgement on my own. Instead of just asking how a particular system sounds I want to know WHY it sounds the way it does and how it will flow. Where can I go to learn this information? What's inside all those different cans, cats, and resonators? Where can I find flow rates? How much difference does a straight through design make? How about the shape of the can? The material from which they are made? Et cetera.

The manufacturers web sites are not very helpful, and the dealers all tout the brands the sell. I need a beginners web site for exhaust systems. Thanks for any info.
