new pistons in a 70k mi motor = needs hone?
what do you guys think?
i'm planning to put some pistons in my gsr block
the thing is it's my daily, so i have to have it done in a day, which means i can't take the block off the car and take it to a machine shop to get it honed.
i'm pretty sure my block is in good condition,
am i safe just dropping in new pistons and new rings? or do i really need a hone?
thanks

needs to be honed for the new rings. you can do that with a high speed drill and a hone. bottle hone brushes are easy to use. you can get one for about $30.
hope that helps! oh...make sure you use lots of honeing oil.

where do we get the hone from? i have a good idea of how it looks like, but could you link me to some sort of site?
thanks for the help

also,
if i do hone it, i'm sure it will be bored out. will this change be significant as the new piston to wall gap will be greater than it's suppose to be.
thanks

If you using stock bore piston, you don't need to get it bored. All you need to do it hone it just enough to take the glaze off the cylinder holes. It don't take enough materail off honing it to worry about the piston clearance.
You can get a cylinder hone from any parts store. If you have a AutoZone, you can use the loan-a-tool deal.
Hope this helps out. It what I did for my car. Runs GREAT!

You want to hone it just enough to break the glaze on the cylinder walls.

yeah i know the dif. between honing and boring, i was just affraid that even with honing, the cylinders will bore out a little, which it will, but not as noticable as pointed out earlier....thanks JDMwannaB
Do it right the first time...remove the block just to make sure no honing particles get on the crank or anywhere else on the engine. Why take a chance on screwing up the whole engine??
your welcome SSPB DC2
you can use a shop towel to cover up the rod journal of the cylinder you are honing. this will keep it clean. besides...your going to clean the journals, rod bearings, etc.. before you put it back together. also, using lots of honing oil will help wash the residue away. you can also use a water hose to spray the cylinder out and the crank. just dry it good and spray it with WD40.
good luck on the build.
