h23a questions
Ive been looking for a h22a to buy when all of a sudden a h23a dropped out of the sky, actually someone i know owns a mechanic shop and said he would give me the h23a for free, only problem is that it has a bad connecting rod. I have a few questions.
1. Has anyone boosted this motor? How good is this motor at handling boost?
2. Will this motor bolt up to my F22B2 Tranny (I have a 94 accord LX)
3. Is this motor good at all?
I do plan to take the motor, just wanted to see if anybody knew if this motor was good at handling boost. Im looking at rebuilding the whole thing. thanks for any help

H23's are excellent motors to boost. i think that if you upgrade the pistons to aftermarket, you have to resleeve the motor (or so i heard). it will bolt right up to your tranny. it is an excellent alternative to an H22, it's cheaper, and it holds boost well.
if you want to run aftermarket forged pistons, yes, you have to resleeve because of the FRM lining. good motor choice. there are some guys making some very impressive numbers on here with that motor. DLB1994 just had a topic about his, also Boostedh23a1 in the prelude forum is doing some good work. I'm not sure who else.
EDIT: I would also recommend replacing the main bearings and piston rings. A lot of the h23's off of ebay or other sites seem to have problems with those.

You can IM exospeedamcrx here in Honda-tech. He can get good prices on motor packages that includes resleeving, rod and piston, and anything else you want to do to your newly accuired H23.
to answer your original question, that motor is an excellent choice for boosting...if you would like to get crazy with it, resleeve the block and replace the rods, pistons, and bearings...but, the block is already pretty damn strong as it is closed deck from the factory as opposed to the open deck design of the h22...this will add strength to the sleeves so that you are able to push more boost on stock internals...the rings are somewhat questionable if you do decide to go with stock internals, but if you go aftermarket, new ones should come with new pistons...the stock rods would be fine if you shot peened (sp?) them unless you plan on running crazy boost...other than that, just modify the head to get the air flowing better and you should be set...but yes, the h23 is a great motor to start with...the extra 100 cc of displacement is nice in a 4 cylinder...
well i have finally decided what i am going to do, im going to rebuild it back to stock, and run nitrous for a while, i do plan to boost it but i want to get the motor in my car before summertime, any advice or suggestions? the person who suggested that i just rebuild it back to stock was a friend of mine, he has a 10 sec gsx,

I'm starting to lean more on the H23 side too, because I want something to build and boost 15 psi daily on. But I don't like the idea of spending all that $$$ on an engine that only has 30 more hp than the one I already have in my car. Thats a tight deal man, good luck with it, let me know how it turns out.

For the money it takes to rebuild and put nitrous on the H23, you could boost your F22 and make MORE power. For around $1500 you could have a very good turbo setup.

i could save money and build a nice turbo f22 but i like to be different. plus the motor was for free so i can tear it apart and build it while i still drive my car. my car is a daily driver so its not like i can just pull the motor and build it
I do plan to boost it, just going to run nitrous for this summer, i want to get the motor in as soon as i can, i plan to have another car by sept so i can pull that motor back out.

yea it can be done with a good turbo setup but like i said, i like to be different, and i only have one car so i cant afford to work on my engine out of my car
