Smoking Problem............LONG Explanation
I checked my oil this morning and noticed it was low, about halfway between the 2 marks on the dipstick. I grabbed 2 quarts out of the garage and added them to the motor. Checked it about 10 minutes later and it seemed like that did it. I started it up to let it warm up and went in the house to get my daughter and noticed alot of white smoke at start up. It seemed to go away after a few minutes and I went to drive away and noticed my motor seemed to be noisy so I popped the hood and I forgot to put the oil cap back on the motor (hope that doesn't hurt the motor) so I had oil all over the underside of the hood and valve cover.
Anyway to make a long story longer, when I went to start it up later today it was smoking really bad and the motor seemed really tight like it didn't want to rev up. I
Is it possible that I added to much oil and that is the reason for the smoke and the tightness in the motor? Any help would be appreciated.
Oh by the way, the car is a 1991 civic std hatch with the d15 in it. Thanks again

It sounds like you added way to much oil, I would drain it very soon. You put about 1 and a half quarts to much in. It takes 1 quart to fill the oil to the bottom hole to the top hole.
each dot is a quart... you put way too much in, and that wasn't too low... mine goes to the very bottom barely registering on the dipstick, but it still does have about 2 quarts in it (my car loves oil)
Wow guys. I guess I did put too much oil in. I'm going to drain it tomorrow morning. This is why I love having you guys around. Thanks for the replies

What were you thinking?!?!
What were you thinking?!?!
I was thinking that the line being halfway down meant that it was about half empty. I wasn't sure so I figured I would be safe. Guess I overdid it.

Was it smoking from under the hood? If so the oil that spilled all over the hot motor and header will cause smoke. But for sure, get the oil and the correct level.
No. It has been smoking out the exhaust. I've never seen a Honda smoke like this. I've been afraid to start it back up. I'm going to drain it tomorrow and refill it with 4 quarts. Hopefully that will take care of the problem...

hondas and specially that motor takes about 3.5qts
just put 3 qts in.... check the dip stick,...\
just add a few oz. of more oil.... check dip stick ..... do that until dip stick its full to the top hole....
Yeah, definitely don't just add oil without checking.
Check the dipstick and try to get it close to the second hole. Does the D15 hold 3.5 quarts? I'd say add 2 quarts then check the dipstick. Add more accordingly

Again Thanks for the responses. There would be alot of trial and error with out this web site. Getting ready to do the oil now.
Looked out the window and we're getting more frigging snow. Looks like the oil is postponed for now..............

The little washer that goes between the pan and the oil drain plug...it goes *CRUSH* when you tighten the plug on it.
Go get one - it's less than a buck and keeps you from dripping oil.
By the way, my buddy lets his dad do his car stuff for him. So his dad added oil one day. Ryan noticed his CRX was smoking real bad later that day, so he pulled over and called his dad. Dad came out and asked..."did you add oil to it recently?" Ryan said, "yeah, bout a quart the other day...I had noticed it was about a quart low the day before..." So both Ryan and his dad had added oil to the car, giving it about a quart too much oil. Same thing happened - mad smoke!

Haha. That's funny. I couldn't believe the amount of smoke that was filling up my yard. I thought something had gone horribly wrong with my engine. I was just a we-todd when it came to adding oil
Just an update.........finally got around to doing the oil today. I grabbed an 8 quart bowl from my kitchen and threw it under the car, opened the drain plug and guess what...................I filled the bowl up!!! Now it might not have been an 8 quart bowl but according to the sticker on the bottom that's what it was. No wonder the damn thing was somoking.
to me for being retarded. Thanks for all the help guys. Just glad nothing bad happened to the motor.
