Default 4WS people - any problems

Need some input from those with 92+ Prelude 4WS. I am about about to purchase one, but my mechanic told me to beware of it, b/c there seems to be problems with the 4WS system and it'd be very costly to fix. The problem he said was that if the 4WS system screws up, you may very well not be able to driving in a straight line!

What I like to know is how many of you have had problems with your 4WS system, and if so how much was it to fix.

Also, is there any way to eliminate the 4WS altogether?

Please, any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

Hey man, I have 4WS. I do have an isssue with mine. Every 5 th time I start my car...the light will come on. If I turn off the car..let it sit for a little while and then start it back it...80% of the time the light will go away.

I do have a weird feeling that when I do drive my car when the 4WS light is on....that the rear wheels move at random times....I have no 100% witnessed this. I just notcie that the car seems a little more squirley when the light is on.
Hope this helps.

This is some bad information. If anything is wrong with the 4WS the system shuts off completely and the rear wheels lock centered. They have strong springs in the system to ensure that they will never lock at an angle. If you watch the rear wheels when you turn the car off with the wheel turned the rear wheels will go back to center. I would not worry about this. Yes if something breaks it can be very costly to fix but if you do not have the money or don't want to spend it on fixing this system the car will operate as if it does not have 4WS. I am sure that if you wanted to remove the system you could do so. That's my 2cents.

Anyone else has any opinions?
I just wonder why my mechanic might say that the car won't drive straight if it screws up, he must've seen it before?
