Default adjusted valves to factory specs, and now my idle wants to die.

I adjusted my valves to factory specs, and now my idle wants to die. What could have caused this? It starts normal, but it wants to die when engine is warm. It kinda surges, then shuts off(needle goes to zero) Ryan

I am assuming that you are talking about a B16 right? Did you adjust the valves when the engine was dead cold? Ive never done vavle adj on a B series but I hear adjusting VTEC heads takes a delicate touch.

Yeah, it was sitting for like 2.5 hours. Anyone else? Ryan

Im pretty sure I know what happened. You prolly adjusted one or more of the exhaust valves too tight when cold. It should be Intake .006 Exhaust .008. If you went to tight then when the motor warms up the clearances become no existant on the the exhaust valve because the metal has expanded so the valves are actually staying open when idleing. Thus you are bleeding off compression which keeps the engine running. Just my .02

that happened to me on my 00 Si, and all I did was adjust the idle on the set screw on the throttle body and everything was perfect again, maybe it's different for obd-0 b16's though. Hope that helps.

I just found this: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=382753

How long should I have waited to let it cool down before the adjustment, 2.5 hours was too short? Yeah, I adjusted them at .006 not quite .007 intake, and .007 not quite .008 exhaust. Not quite means that it wouldnt fit through. Is this too tight? Ryan

Maybe its not your valves. Check your IAC and your timing.

If it didn't fit through, than it is too tight. It should fit through, with a TINY bit of resistance. After you have re-adjusted them, than I would try messing with the idle.

Well, I re -adjusted the valves, and all is cool now. I guess they were too tight. Thanks. Ryan
