The pillar is 1 inch tweets, 6 1/2" speakers in doors and 6x9 in back. If you are replacing the speakers, make sure they fits. The door speakers are shallow. Some of the 6x9's out there don't fit. Hope this helps you.
ooo, great tip, never considered depth.
can anyone recommend some speakers that they know will fit in my doors and my deck?
or a brand that typically runs "shallow"

The basket? That factory mounting thing? You can't unscrew those on EKs?
Either way, there are VERY few speakers that fit the doors on Civics without modifications. Your probably going to need a spacer, because your speakers will still interfere with your window when it is down.

Most people run 6 1/2" speakers, either components or coaxials. I've never seen a set of 6 1/2" speakers that wouldn't fit in my doors. Matter of fact the only speakers that I would look out for are those with a 3" mounting depth. They might hit the inside of the door panel, depending on what size spacer you use for them.

Basically yes. You can make spacers yourself for whatever a small sheet of wood (perferably mdf) costs, so long as you have a jig-saw or something similar. If your really desperate you could probably make spacers with a Dremel. Spacers are just wooden rings that you place between your speakers and your doors, making your 6" opening a 6 1/2" opening. They also provide added speaker depth for our shallow doors.

spacers are not needed as stated above. all you have to do is cut out the back of the factory basket(plastic) with a razor or dremel. I have some 6.5 inch JBL GTO 625's in the doors of my '00 Si and have no clearance issues with the window or factory grill. My JBL's have a 2" depth and a 7/8 mounting height. You might be able to even go a hair deeper. Mine, and most sets of speakers also come with mounting adapters that accomodate factory mounting screw holes.
The mounting ring will go between the speaker and the door itself. It will not be visible with the door panel on, so don't worry what it looks like.
I tried this, and it didn't work for me. My speakers' cutout diameter was larger than the opening of the factory basket.
I ended up making mounting rings and attaching them on top of the factory baskets because my doors don't seal right, and I didn't want the speakers getting soaked. I used 3/4" MDF to do this, which was WAAAAY overkill seeing as how my speakers are barely 2 1/4" deep, so at high volume levels, they hit the inside of the door panel.
