Default How do you people finance your 'hobby'?

It has probably been discussed before but I wanna see how people like myself finance their shiznit. I'm a 21 year old full-time college student living at home (w\ car payment, CC bill, tuition out of pocket). Is anyone in my situation and has dumped 5k+ into their car? Ok. How?!

To fund my hobby, I work 16 hrs/week while going to college full time. Also, during the summers I work full time and save some money then. My internship pays fairly well, but what sucks is that I have 2 expensive hobbies: cars and guns.

Man you dont have to dump 5k into your car to make look nice or to be fast. All you need to spend some time and research for the right parts.

5k meaning built motor, boost, nice suspension setup, paint job, etc.. It easily adds up to 5k+ no matter what good price you manage to get.

Me and a few of my friends have civics with big wings and green neon. Every once in a while we team up and someone jumps out the sunroof and into the cab of a passing by semi-truck...

Then we hijack it and steal thousands of DVD players...

Simple really.

I work 15+ hrs of OT per week, and when you make $24.75 hr regularly the OT dollars add up quick!

5 k will not get you anywhere near a completely tuned and boosted teg. think more like 8-10,000 if you want to do it all and right the first time. that wouldn't include much in exterior/looks but if it were up to me i would work the car a plan and stick to it. unless you blow the engine or crash it like every other young kid whoz been owned by a car wreck in their teg. i have an all motor plan some of the decisions i have made early in th plan for the car were a lil unthought and now things have beeen corrected, but at an additional cost to what i originally thought i was going to have to spend. think it out and do it in batches if you're on a budget. suspension first-go with nice full coilovers like the bilsteins-900 throw ona type r sway bar to stop the bodyroll-120 if you don't have a front strut bar get one. then get yourself some nice 16's by rota for 350 and then tires and mounting for another 375- then work the exhaust intake header cat. this is where you really have to think out your project. Why? because the interior diameter of the exhaust will play a major roll in the limitation of the hp and torque(if you go too small and/or too big in diameter) for your achievable horsepower plan. then if the engine is over 60,000 start working on that. do it all at once so to save you time and money on parts that need to be replaced such as 60 dollar gaskets. i would figure out a way to port an polish the upper head without causing too much of a loss in compression. bore out the lower block and bore it out and sleeve it to a 1.9-2.0L. also set up poil ssuirters in the piston chambers if there are ine in the block already. knowing which rods and pistons here will be the trick to a long lasting engine. use the type r cams from the 00-01 models. set those up in the engine with jun cam gears and get a . do the springs as well and coat the stock retainers so they can handle the heat of the 8500-9000rpm limit. at the same time that was being done i'd send out my ecu to be set up with the hondata programming and throw in some tranny work like final drive attached to a lsd, lightened one peice chromoly flywheel and a nice slutch that won't wear out because it and the pressure pplate are too weak for the hp/torque range you are looking to get to. then once it was all together drive it tuned as best as possible to a well known hondata tuner and let them go to town with it. then after that if the 200 whp you are getting with a 11.3-5.1 compression 2.0 liter b18c1 or c5 engine just isn't fast enough for you and you don't want it to be a daily driver anymore you can you can throw on a turbo and scrap your current intake and exhaust sytsem. then you could push whatever numbers you wanted. it never ends. if you get hooked you'll figure out a way to pay for the car's addictive needs. but letz hope its an honest one.

Wow, ballers in here! When I had my civic back in highschool, I had part time job that paid $12/hr @ 15 hrs a week. I dropped well over 5k on it by means of a greddy turbo kit, rims, etc. And then it got jacked.

Now, my fourth year in college...I got to worry about tuition, books, gas, girlfriend, food, and endless bills. I'm a supervisor at SJSU's sport club and on the weekends I'm an assistant tech at a shop. They only way I'm able to turbo my teg is through my sponsors Visa and MC.

If I had to pay rent, I would never be able to work on my car.

I work and save up my money a little at a time until I have what I need. I don't blow $$ on stupid ricey **** and do more serious mods. I'd rather have one nice set of wheels than a truckful of apc ****. cc's are the devil too.
Also there are a lot cheaper ways of getting **** done than what everybody else does. I'm doing a ps2, dvd, and plasma tv for $120 (minus the ps2 cost).

Yeah, I mostly get my toys during the summer when I can work full time, I got my current bolt-ons over half of the summer which isn't too bad. My CC balance is higher than I want it to be so I'm trying to only use it for emergencies. I need wheels for the summer; hopefully my tax return will be good to me. I can't wait to graduate and make some real flow, I'm gonna build a sick *** car

I am also a freelance programmer but only can find jobs once in a while which do pay well when I do get them. If you know of anyone that needs custom software please send them my way, I am fairly inexpensive and I'll pay you commision.
