Default SCCA workers get per diem $$??

I was at our SCCA regional meeting tonight disscusing the issue of corner workers getting paid, actually "rienbursed", a daily fee for events outside a pre-set range. Any of you guys work the corners? If so what are your local SCCA's policies? If any of you guys are workin the NASA stuff what do they pay? Thanks for any info, it's all helpfull.

our scca group pays for a party after the race, meals, drinks, etc... some times there's a raffle for prizes: gift certificates, store credit, etc... but no actual $$$.

i don't mention this but i'd do it for just and race tips

my SF region does pretty much the same thing, and i agree wholeheartedly about the last comment. corner working has been a good experience for me. support your club by more than entry fees!

AFAIK, DC region does lunch, dinner/party, and a yearly gift for each worker (jacket, bag, something like that), but does not do a per diem. I think this is pretty standard for SCCA. There is always talk of doing a per diem, but budget retraints usually make it impossible.

guys, thanks for the feedback. It's actually a very interesting issue. A lot of the problems revolve around the fact that SCCA is a non-profit organization and there are tax implications to paying workers. THat's why its actually a rienbursment, not straight pay. Our issue is that the two tracks in our region are over 2 hour drive time apart. Our workers from the north are having to buy hotels to work down south and visa-versa. We do the BBQ and parties too, but needless to say, a volunteer worker should not have to pay out of pocket to work our events. As a member of the BOD my vote will go to rienbursment of the workers. Thanks again for the feedback.

I dont think SCCA even pays for hotel rooms for the workers.

NASA workers get credits towards HPDEs (work 3, drive 1) , a hotel room (although sometimes floorspace) , lunch each day, and party sat night.

My region is currently reimbursing people up to $50/day for working events. It's a reimbursement that does require receipts. The reason we're doing it is that we're holding our first race in many years and we're trying to increase our worker base before this first race.

As someone who's worked at Summit Point many times, yes, we get lunch, there is the dinner/party (though that's not really worker-exclusive), but the yearly gift? I wish. Supposedly, there used to be a special day in October called OATT (Officials at the Track), for workers, though you still had to pay for it, only workers could attend. Despite working virtually every MARRS weekend in '97, I didn't see an invite to that either. So, if DC region does actually get "yearly gifts," they must only go to certain people (probably the corner captains), or possibly only DC region members (despite the many BRR, SCR, CPR and ODR people who work the MARRS events).

Working the corners can be fun, if you are treated right, and frankly, lunch and time between sessions to sit down or run to the porta-john means a great deal to many workers. I've been to events (non-SCCA) where I've been exploited as a worker, and believe me, it makes you think twice about volunteering your time when you are taken advantage of.

Karen

Our region does the party and worker lunches. For awhile we considered handing out $10 bills to let them buy their own lunches with (about the cost of the track food) and those who normally brought their own lunch could pocket it. The problem with actually paying them for their working effort was then technically a W-2 tax form and reportage would be required.

Since most workers do so out of interest in the sport and cameraderie (sp?)(I did it for years before I actually started racing) it was decided to constinue with the food and do a large budget party with lots of door prizes.

Eventhough SCCA cant pay their workers, they do their best to take care of em. Our region offers stuff like travel bonus for those who travelled the furthest, proper camping accomodations, rest areas at the track. theres a end of the year vacation giveaway. certain rungroups have specifically put in an extra $20 or so to their entry fees to help pay for white fire suits (not cheap). and theres always a line in the entry fee for YOU the racer to add your own appreciation to those who make YOUR racing fun, safe, and at the least possible. ill say it again, support your CLUB by more than entry fees and dues. (just volunteering your time would be good start)
