Default Roll Bars illegal?

My friend says Roll Bars are illegal and you can get a ticket for them. I ordered one and it will be here in a month. I can't see why it would be illegal, it's safer than a stock car. Anyone ever heard of that?

im sure it depends on the state that you live in . but if they were outlawed it would be because they are designed *for off road use only*

LOL, clear corners were made for "Offroad use only" according to the makers. So basically anything non-OEM is illegal I suppose. I doubt cops would care though.

yes, roll bars are ment to use with helmets. also depending on how crazy your cage is it could be called a distraction, causing many blind spots or whatever. i was told by a cop the other day, my exhaust isn't legal because its not factory. he didnt ticket me on it since it wasnt illegal...but they are trained to say things like that, to make u sweat and tell all ur friends, so they think its illegal. cops are like rice in a way, spreading false information.

In addition, having a rollbar (or especially a cage) can cause more damage to the other car if someone hits you. Since it's technically not legal for the street, they can get legally upset at you...

Well...*****...SUV should be WAY illegal then!! @.@

When I had my cage installd, I was told that there were certain guidelines that needed to be followed if you wanted to make it street legal. It had to be a certain distance from the floor, but not above a certain height. You couldnt have crossbars on the drivers, or pass side. It was more about occupant saftey more than anything else.

I think that there could be two issues dealing with it it's legal.

One would be if it obstructs your vision in ANY way. Technically, a border tint along the top of the windshield is illegal (according to the Calofornia Highway Patrol).

The other issue would be if it in any way effects your seat belts or shoulder belts. This is part of the designed restraint system from the factory and could even be taken so far as include aftermarket seats.

Does anyone know where I can lookup all the laws about this stuff?

I already know most of my state laws, and roll bars/cages are perfectly legal in my state. But the federal requirements may be different. Does anyone know where I can look up the NHTSA rules online?

Well the Roll Bar I got is just a bar, most basic Autopower makes, no horizontal bars or anything. It will have no effect on my seat belts, I have no back seat so it's not like I can carry passengers anyway. And the only way it could hurt someone elses car is if they T-boned me so I hope it ***** their car up badly and I live.

hell yeah! I feel you on that! I was talking about that the other day, SUV's are getting WAY TOO big. I mean, you can't have your car too low to the ground say.. 22in from the front headlights? They shouldn't allow SUV's or anything say... 3 feet above!!! They think they own the road! Some suvs are so high, they're sidestep is where my shoulders are!!! and some cops can be punks about the aftermarket thing... i mean.. don't they have custom shops for a reason? look at cribs ! ARGH!!!!

i honestly don't see why roll cages aren't standard features on passenger cars. i really don't. the concept has been consistently track tested and shown to be extremely lifesaving. think about it, the jaws of life would be obsolete because your roof wouldn't ever get squashed down...they'd only need them to cut off the doors to get you out if necessary. and if you flipped your car or a truck fell on you or whatever, you'd be okay.

why must politics get in the way in one of the most effective safety features we have? i bet if every car had not only seatbelts and airbags but a roll cage, deaths would be dramatically reduced.

i'm just gonna start wearing a crash helmet to the grocery store.

Forget the other guy! It's his/her own damn fault for hitting me and causing the accident. As long as Im cool

But seriously, I'de like to think that they would be legal but I guess you'de have to check with the state. You might be able to ask the insurance company but im sure they will say yes since roll bars can save you and then the insurance company wouldnt be out a ton of money like if you died.

You should note that nobody to date has said that a roll bar or cage is illegal in it's self.

The best source for anybody is (and this is REAL basic) to go in and ask the police or highway patrol!! Just go in and ask. (be polite and don't dress like a gang banger!) If they say that it's illegal, then ask to know what section of the Vehicle Code covers it and ask to see a copy of the Vehicle Code.

At the same time, you should ask if it's an item that the police out on the street are looking for.

One problem that you can have is that the Vehicle Code is "interpreted" differently by different agencys! I've had the Highway Patrol view it a totally different way than the Police. In the end, it's the Judge that you may have to face that makes the final call.

I've "been there, done that" with other situations dealing with the "officials".

My friend got rear ended in his rex by an suv and the autopower bar saved his life. The officer at the scene even said most modifications are useless but that bar saved him and his passengers lives.
