Lightened Flywheels
I'm looking for recommendations on what brand to buy. The car is a multi-purpose street/autox/open track car. I'm not concerned about the class it puts me in. I've had lightened flywheels before, but it was back when the only thing available was to lighten a stock flywheel. So I know the positives and negatives. I'm looking for advice on which brands are good and bad.
Thanks in advance,
jim

I've had Clutchmasters and now ACT lightened flywheels in my car. Personally I had some problems with the CM flywheel. The ACT 8.8lb flywheel in the car now is the bomb!!! The car revs like a bike (sort of) and the overall feel of the ACT clutch/flywheel combo is much better than the CM.
It would help if you identified what car it was for. Civic, Integra, Prelude, etc.
If it's a B-series honda, I'd recommend the 6.75 lb aluminum comptech flywheel.

What car is this for? I have a 6 lb Comp Tech in my CRX, I have had it for the last 5 years. I love it. It is definitely makes the car more finicky to drive daily, being that it is so light, but it is not that bad and easy to get use to. Just be careful who you let drive the car. The quality is typical Comp Tech, which is GREAT. The price was also typical Comp Tech. Pretty heafty.
Another option is Mueller. I know they build flywheels for Stillen. My roomate has one built by them in his CRX and It was comperable build quality to the Comp Tech at a much cheaper price. It was 7 lbs. You may have to provide them with a stock flywheel though so they can use it as a guide to make yours. I do not hve any contact info on them, but I did a search a little while ago and found their Phone number.

The car is an '89 Civic si with the D16. It's got a few mods that result in
116 hp at the wheels. The lightest flywheel I've used on a street car was 9 lbs., and it was fairly easy to live with, but the engine was turbocharged. Jim

I have a 7.5lb Fidanza installed in my GSR, and to be honest I barely notice the difference in normal driving.
The biggest thing it did was to allow much quicker throttle blips for downshifts. Which was nice.
Edit: wrong weight

The Mueller flywheels have a potential weakness that I have seen become a problem if used aggressively. The friction surface is only attached to the flywheel with ten bolts and will allow the friction surface to warp if over heated. I have a Muller flywheel sitting in my work area without a friction surface that experienced this problem. CM/Fidanza and Comptech use 16 bolts to attach the friction surface to the flywheel and I have never seen the warping problem with these flywheels.
Crosser if you have a phone number where Muller Fabrication can be reached could you post it or email it to me, I need a friction surface to repair this flywheel for a friend. Thanks!

Interesting to know. I did not notice that on my roomates flywheel before it went in his CRX. He has not had any problem with it and has been autocrossing/few Pro Solo's for a coupe years now.
You are in luck I found the scratch papaer I wrote the number I found for Mueller on. I have no idea if it is a good number or not. This is what I came up with after a pretty thorough search on the web. 714-530-9555.
Good luck.

you can't get a stock wheel under 10lbs without losing some serious structural integrity.. there's no way i'd ever run a stock 20-21lb flywheel that has more than half the material removed..
