Im going to hint at our new project motor. In the middle of building a b20/vtec monster motor. Our goal is to run it in the Pro/AM FWD in IDRC and NHRA events. Our HP goal is 600whp.

We have a set of Eagle rods but im pretty sure we are going to sell them and get a stronger rod as i dont feel safe with trusting the eagle at such high boost and hp levels.

I called crower and they said their "off the shelf" 4340 Steel Billet I beam rod will be strong enough to support the power needed, but if i wanted something stronger i could get a "custom" I bean which crower said had more material added to it to make a "beefer" rod.

Crower quoted me $677 for their off the shelf model, or $711 for the stronger custom ones.

So my question is..how strong are their custom rods? Should i consider another brand of rod? Im trying not to break the bank with building the bottom end. Some of this stuff is expensive!

Crower rocks! IMO i would spend the extra $$ for the beefier rods, it's worth the piece of mind.

 

Crowers have been proven over and over again

 

i would just go with the pauter machine rods those things are thick. and i have yet to see one of those rods brake.

 

i agree we broke a crower rod at 667 in our race hatch. our new setup is going to have pauter rods that are already on their way.

 

pauter or crower will hold that power just perfectly fine.

What about Manley rods? Is anyone using them??? And how do they compare to Crower?

 

I didn't trust the Eagles anymore either and I went with Pauter on my newbuildup. tony1 and Jotech have broken Crower, Carillo and now are running Pauters this year, granted I am not nor anyone else I know of on the board making the power Jotech is 900+whp methanol but peace of mind is great. Just got a good deal on the Pauters and were in stock soo they will be here tomorrow.

I paid $690 plus shipping. Expensive but they were in stock. My hook ups couldn't get them cuase they make them as ordered I beleive. I tried some Pauter dealers on this board but they never answered their phones.

 

Pauters on my new street car setup too my crowers held up to week after week after week abuse on the street. that was only at 522whp on boost and 565 w/ spray though. Our race car broke one at 667whp.

 

pauter rods have been tried and tested here in miami all of the fast dsm's run pauter rods these shop i use to work for wrightouch performance, thats all they use on all of there customer street cars and there own race car. pauter gets from me.

 

Just adding extra material and weight to a rod will not make it stronger. It might even hinder performance. I think that would be dumb to do something custom just to make it beafier. Its all in the design of the rod. Crowers are a pretty decent rod, but the pin bushings wear out pretty quickly with them. You might also look into the Manley rods as well. They seem to be pretty nice.

 

I would like to know this also..I will most likely be using their rods and full valvetrain. I have until later this year to figure it out. But I'd like to get some feedback from users of their stuff.

 

LOL Check the post above by ninesecrx he and his dad earl use Manley rods with luck, they are dealers too. If I remember correctly they are running over 600whp? Or is this a number I Made up Mike/Earl?

All this talk about Eagles failing has me thinking I should change my mind. I am shooting for 500+. This sucks. You hear great stories about a product, the craftsmanship and design look good... then you hear a pile of $hit about them later on how they suck ..blah.. I hate buying **** and then have to sell it off. It makes me want to roll this 25k Honda off of a clifF! I have heard Eagles break at 500 and higher, I have heard that some have luck up to 600+.. so and some manage 7@# hp etc..
Wouldnt you think the biggest issue with rod longevity would be tuning? If stock rods are going to 400whp well tuned (with stock ringlands failing first), shouldn’t an aftermarket rod that is specifically designed for boost be able to handle at least 600?

It really sucks to hear a product pushed out the yang about how good it is then you get it and all of the sudden it sucks...ie: radius rods etc.. grrr!!
Anyone else run into this?

its not that the eagles suck. Its that the other rods are just better. here is the thing. you spend over 2500.00 building your bottom and for another 300.00 you have more peace of mind knowing that if something is going to fail it wont be the rod most likely.you never want to see 2500+ go down the drain over 300.00. I have seen stock rods handle 400whp. I wouldnt sleeve my block and put je pistons if i only wanted 300whp and run stock rods. Its just that extra sense of security in using a better rod.

 

I totally agree with that. We are willing to spend the extra money. We just want to make sure what we are buying is going to take whatever we throw at it. Weither it is Crower Off the shelf's... Crower Custom (thicker) or Pauter. our goal is around 600whp and i dont want to worry that a crower might fail at 630? or 660?... What is the best? Crower, Carrillo, Manley, Pauter?

Gary Gardella has laid down over 900hp with Manley's.
