looking to spend $300-400 to surprise my bf with a new one in the near future..

I would go with a pioneer HU. For 300-400 American(I'm assuming) you should be able to get one of their higher end models with a multi-colored display. Other then just amber. I've used many Pioneer units and have loved every single one of them. I'm sure there are other brands that are just as good, but I just happen to have most of my experience with Pioneer's.
