Default 89 hatch featured in Hot Rod magazine!

Larry Widmer's 89 SI hatch was featured in Hot Rod magazine's march issue. You might know this guy from http://www.theoldone.com. It's stret legal, daily driven and puts out 487 hp @ 7,300 from a supercharged SOHC.

"So how does it run? How about a best of 11.04 seconds at 134 mph? Enough to put the hurt on most so-called musclecars and the fun back in Widmer’s daily driving"

I wanna know how he used the GM knock sensor though.

Its always interesting to see a basically domestic car magazince do a write up on an import. I wonder if they would have ever put something like this in their magazine if it had been built by someone else like say myself??!! The guy had been like a legend with working on domestics with nascar and such you think thats the only reason he was put into Hot Rod?? The only other time that I have seen an import in Hot Rod magazine is when some guy (I forgot his name) built a CRX with a big block in it (kind of like my avatar) I think that the one comment made was pretty unnecessary <U>"We expected to get royally flamed, but instead we were swamped with love letters from the sport compact crowd. We didn’t realize they even knew we existed (they probably found a copy under the Playboy stack in the back of dad’s closet)"</U> They make it sound like the only people into Hondas are people that are like 16??!! I have to give the guy credit he did build one hell of a Civic but it should have been in a magazine where it could have been truely admired and not in one that is Bias to imports.

Makesd me wish i went turbo or supercharged sometimes, all this money on an n/a sohc would probably whoop out a 300hp beast instead of a 170hp...ack it hurts...

edit: haha my post had nothing to do with that quote...just correcting you i suppose, but im all messed up so even then who knows

That was a reprint , it was featured along time ago I think(like years). and to answer the other .
On a side note , that head pictured looks alot like a b16 head.

How could it be a B16 head if its a D-series block?? All the work was done to the original D-series that came with the car.

So in 1989 Widmer became the proud owner of an icebox-white Civic Si, which combines the intimidation factor of a rusty Yugo with the styling flair of a rubber doorstop. It’s invisible to the men in blue and completely devoid of the lurid decals so beloved of the import cruiser crowd.
and they wonder why most import owners consider muscle car guys asshats

Does anyone know the REAL story on Endyne? I keep reading about this godsend of a supercharger that is supposed to "change the way we build hondas," it looks to me like he has been designing this supercharger for like 4-5 years. Anyone know when he is actually going to release it?

J

All i'm stating is that the article is giving false info , it says

"This is how the cylinder head looks after Endyn is done modifying it. Amazingly enough, it allows a high-compression ratio of 11.2:1 on pump gas."

Well its bs because that is a pic of a b series head. I realize its a d series motor in the car.

That is good to know....damn there is a lot of people who say the guy is a master...and then there is the people who are saying that he is doo doo.....since it has been like 4 years in the making of the supercharger kit, I will consider it a pipe dream!

I'm one of those rare guys thats into Honda's AND old muscle cars (amongst other things). I mess with Honda's because they are technically superior. I look at my Honda as a tool for driving. But I'm an old fart, so my '65 Mustang is the car I drive so I can fit in with people my own age! I subscribe to Hot Rod, and when I read this post the other day I couldn't remember seeing this article. I went home and checked and sure enough it wasn't in there. Sometimes they publish a news stand version that is different than the one the subscribers get. I'm guessing that was the case here.
Anyway, You might be interested to know that Hot Rod does this every once in a while. I think they see the appeal to these cars, but unfortunately they get blasted by their readers every time they do it. A year or two ago they even did a buildup of a GS-R engine. They also featured import cars and full size vans back in the 70's. My guess on the head versus the engine is that a picture of the real head wasn't available so they used a different one to illustrate the work. That's pretty typical of a lot of magazines and I think the only thing they do wrong when they do this is not point it out in the first place.
