Translating 1/4 mile improvements (with new engine) into lap times (with new engine)
My 1988 Civic has a 1.5 SOHC, 92 hp. I have the 4.25 final drive from the Si. I'm considering engine options for the future. By far, the cheapest option for me is a 97-00 1.6 SOHC vtec. They are cheap and abundant here (like 500-600$CAD without tranny or ECU) and I can keep my recently rebuilt tranny. Basically, I'm wondering if it's worth it or whether I should continue to save up for a B18b. My mechanic has this swap in his car and he is 1 - 1.1 seconds faster on the 1/4 mile with an otherwise similar weight in a similar car (he has a full interior, I have a roll cage = similar weight). He runs 15.3, 15.4, my best is 16.4. I basically want to know how many seconds this will be at a track like Watkins Glen, Shannonville, my small local track (a mixed bag where I lap 1:08), etc. It's gott be worth a certain number of seconds per lap, but how many? Has anyone got some kind of formula or any experience with this? Basically, I'll be adding 38 hp or 41% more hp (much less difference in torque). I'd keep the same exhaust system and weight would not change significantly.
P.S. the rules thing is a non-issue. My local series and EMRA will each find a class for me.

I know there are many variables, but, all other factors remaining unchanged, how many seconds can one shave off a lap time with 41% more hp and 20% more torque? On my 2:34 lap of Watkins Glen, will I get 2 seconds, for example, or 8?
