Testing an Ignitor
I posted this in the EG/Ek forum and no go so I thought I would let the real wrench spinners take a crack:
I tested the ignitor in my 92 D16Z6 as spelled out in the chilton book but it is for a 88-91 engine. I unplugged the three wires at the front of the ignitor and then turned on the car. With a multi meter I grounded one probe and then touched the positive to thethree wires and got power out of all three except the left most wire. Is this correct? The ignitor is $100 so I want to be sure that it
is the ignitor that is bad. I know it's an ignition problem as I am getting fuel. My tach (aftermarket hooked into engine speed sensor ground) doesn't even register when I crank the motor over so it must be either the ignitor or the coil and the coil is 1 month old. Any other methods to test an ignitor just to be sure? Thanks

Helms manuals do not provide a specific test for the ignitor. Basically Helms manuals says test everything leading to the ignitor and every the going from it, if they are good the ignitor is bad.
so, if his instructions were for the correct year/engine, then it would sound like he needs an ignitor... but they aren't, and I always trust Helms over Haynes or Chilton.
OK just bought and installed the new ignitor and nothing, no spark. I know I am getting fuel I pulled the plugs and there is gas in the cylinders. Now what? I am not getting any power to my aftermarket tach that is hooked up to the dist. Usually it jumps when the motor cranks but now nothing. I am thinking that there is a break in the system elsewhere. All the fuses are fine I checked them all. Now what??? I really need to get this thing on the raod before I go on my business trip this weekend. I live in the Bay Area and I will supply anyone who can get my car running a case of the beer of their choice. HELP!!!
i had a similar problem and had a terrible time finding out what was wrong. turns out it was just the ignition coil. thing was, it took about a week to die. i didnt understand it. it would poop out on me, then work like an hour later. it kinda sucked. bought an msd and fired it up first try.
