Bad CV joints? Going on a trip...Need help
Hey guys. I'm going on a trip on Thursday and its going to be about 8 hours up and back.
I think one of my CV joints are going bad, because when I make a right turn and press on the gas it makes a knocking noise...
My question is, will I be alright making this trip? Are my cv joints just going to bust on the highway? Is there any temporary fixes I can make to them before I leave?
Thanks. Any help would be greatly apprciated as usual.

If it's only clicking in turns, you should be fine. If it's clicking ALL the time, even when going straight, then you start to worry. Mine have been clicking in turns for quite a few months now, and back in early Nov I made a 1500 mile trip from IL to S. FL (2 days straight driving), towing a 1000 lb trailer, ~350 lbs cargo inside car, and 2 people without a prob. I still haven't changed them and they're still working fine, just a little noisy in the turns (not that bad though). I'd change them when you get a chance though, just so you don't have to worry about it. I'm gonna change mine soon too....on to CV joint pair #3, hehe.
I'm not sure exactly what happens when a CV blows up since I've never had that happen before, but I do know that without LSD if one axle goes, you're stuck!

You should be fine. I have had noisy clunking shafts and kept them for several thousand miles. If your turning your steering wheel and they are clunking so bad that the car shakes I wouldn't suggest it though. When they break, you usually just get stuck because the diff just spins instead of the axles spinning. Absolute worst case-one could break on the highway and lock one tire up causing you to spin out of control. Not likely though.
Thank you all for the awesome help.
I have one more question before I go on this trip that I meant to put in the thread starter.
Besides the obvious, checking the tires and all fluids. Are there any other thing that I should ckeck before getting on the road that maybe the average Joe doesn't check? Anything inconspicuous?
Thanks again.

Definately check to see if your spare tire is inflated to the right pressure...make sure your jack & tools are still there.
On long trips I like to bring about a 1/2 quart of oil and an old coolant container with just water filled about 1/2 way.

Yes, most definitely check the spare as mentioned. I checked mine before my big trip (after never checking it, lol) and it only had 10 psi instead of 60
haha. I also check all belts and hoses, as well as all balljoints and tierods to make sure everything is nice and tight and I won't go losing a wheel at 80 mph (I would imagine that's not fun). Alignment and tire balance too if they're bad, so you don't shake yourself silly. Other than that just look everything over to make sure nothing looks broken or out of place, and everything works like it should (all lights, breaks, steering, etc). You'll be fine though
Have fun on your trip!

And thanks to everyone who helped me out. I really appreciate it. I checked my spare, and it definitely needed to be inflated.
