Does wax hurt paint?
I know this might sound dumb, but a buddy of mine is in an auto body shop class and his instructor told him that no wax is best for a car and that it seals the paint (which I already knew) but that it is bad for the paint to do so. I'd like to hear opinions on this.

uhhhh right, contaminants and dirt and stuff are SO much easier to wash off if the car has a nice coat of quality wax vs. nothing at all.
See that's what I thought, but his instructors arguement is that it doesn't let the paint breathe. Also he was referring to paste wax, not liquid. He also mentioned that paint nowadays is a lot better in quality than back in the day, and that is why as long as you treat the paint good, it should not need waxing.
Wax does hert paint badly, if u wax your car make sure u get wax that has NO SILICONE!. Even armoral is bad for your tires and dash (brings out the color of your tire, and cracks your dash(best thing to use is baby oil for your dash)). Hopefully this helps alittle, if u have any other ?'s just post
The instructor was right about one thing. Paint now is much better than it used to be, but this does not mean you don't wax it. I've been working with a friend of mine who has been painting for the last 15 years. He told me after getting a vehicle initially painted you shouldn't wax it for at least 90 days. I guess this allows the finish to properly cure. Although, during this time frame products such as 'mist-n-shine' or Meguiars quick detail are ok to use.
There are so many different theories on painting. But there does seem to be one universal agreement and that is waxes protect a paints finish from the elements. This in turn helps that finish to last longer.

Coffey your right in some ways. Wax does help your car with certin things but the deal with wax is that it makes it slick and bright which herts u because it attracts more UV's. UV's is a man's worest nightmare, which causes chalking, and craking.
I don't care what anyone says. I refuse to belive that an unwaxed car will stay as shiny and look as good as a vehicle that is waxed. Maybe if your car never sees rain, or salt or even sun, then you probably won't need wax. If paint doesn't need any maintenance then whey do vehicles oxidize and have to be buffed? Paint maintenance is necessary. I think that the product should be selected carefully and if the product isn't applied correctly then yes it can do damage. There are also some really garbage products on the market.

The only time I can see waxing being not good is:
A) When you overwax it. Too much rubbing, being too abrasive...definitely not good. This causes swirl marks, which youll just need more chemicals to get out, and it becomes way too much contact.
B) Using too much of a synthetic wax...with synthetic, less is more.
C) Not using the proper chemicals and/or applicators, IE buffing out wax with a wet, rough cloth, or using wheel cleaner as a tar remover or something. Stick with the chemical that is designed for the job.

I use GOld class wax, very good quality compare to most of the waxes.
No waxing for new coat of paint for at least 3 month, rubbing compound are okay.
however factory bake paint are okay to wax on the next day.
