Default VW/Audi motors and trans.

i know that this doesnt pertain to honda at all and if u have any web sites that do pertain to audi VW please insert here. i was wondering what you people knowabout the engine mounts and trannys on these cars. i know that most all VW motors fit into most all VW cars without much work to the mounts. but i was wondering if the audi motors are as interchangable. like can i take a 1.8t out of an A4 and dropit in a golf. also what is the interchangeability of the tranny of the 2 companies. i.e. how easy would it be to attach a quattro AWD trans to a VW 4 cylinder.

also if anyone has any info on the Audi 5 cylinder that would be great too. as an overview of this all i basically would like some input on: Motors specs for the 2 companies, Interchangability of the parts between motors, and the ability to swap motors in these cars.

again i kow this isnt the right forum or even the right board so if anyone knows of some real good VW/Audi boards please lead me in that direction.

My knowledge mainly pertains to the A1 and A2 chassis(I have owned and modified 5 different ones). I will still try to give you some answers.

1)What kind of swap are you looking to do?
2)What chassis are you working with?

Ok so what is the A1 or A2 chassis?

i was mostly looking to do a swap of an Audi or VW motor into an older golf. ya know when they still had the square bodies, like an 88 or 89. but the part that i have the biggest question with is the main reason i am going to do the swap. i am planning to hook up the quattro AWD system on a golf. i know that there would be lots of custom work involved but i am ready for all the fabrication and that sort of stuff. i just need to know the basic priciple of which motors and tranny will fit into the car and what combinations.

i hope that helps to get your brains workin a little more. all advice and input is well appreciated. TIA

i used to have a MK3/gen 3/ A3 jetta, there all same, pretty much saying its a generation 3 jetta. i used to have a 96, also called a Jetta3. as for the engines being interchangable, i dont see y not, audi and vw r the same company. all the 4 cyl engines for lets say, the A3 vw lineup, are all the same, 2.0 liter, SOHC, 8 valve engine. then u go the vr6, which r all the same, and then the TDi ones. as for tranny's, i think u'd have a hard time putting an AWD trany on a FWD car.

so...if u hear ppl talkin about a A1 or A2 vw, dont confuse it with an Audi A4 (the actual car). but as said in a post above, go to http://www.vwvortex.com very good site, much like H-T. i still hang out there sometimes.

hope i helped

RIP my jetta

thanks for clearing that up. i dont really see how it would be a problem putting a AWD in a FWD. if i take the motor from an AWD and the Trans from AWD then y would it matter that the car was front front wheel drive. maybe i just dont have a total understanding yet of how the whole deal would work. i have read about a guy in switzerland who has a gold with the quattro setup and he has the audi 5 cylinder in it. the thing that i am thinking will need the most modification is where the rear differential will sit and that i will have to get a custom drive shaft. but beyond that i think that it will be just time of matching things up and custom fabbing brackets and such.

you guys have been pretty helpful so far so keep it commin. TIA

What I loved about VW guys is their creativity. Honda people are great in their own way, but it is easier to build a Honda because of the wealth of knowledge available, as well as the wealth of parts. That is why you see 17 year old kids fakin' the funk and calling themselves a guru of customizing.

Trick work like Dahlback Racings A4(Generation 4 chassis) with an Audi quattro awd system and 900hp or Golfs with two VR6 engines, or a triple turbo VR6 in a Golf converted to a pickup, make me tingle.

Don't get me wrong I love my Honda, but it was my VW's which taught me how to work on cars.

BTW I will try to help you break down the chassis codes;

A1; 1976-1984 included Rabbit, Scirroco, Dasher and Pick-up and Rabbit Convertible, 1985-1993 Cabriolet(Rabbit Convertible), 1984-1987 Scirrocco II

A2; 1985-1992 Golf, Jetta

These two chassis are probably the best to play with in my opinion because of the simple nature of their design. Many parts are compatible with the Audi cars and A3 and A4 chassis VW's.

Sounds like you got a nice plan. My whole point to all this is that anything is possibleand it seems like the VW enthusiast is the one who takes them to the limit.

naw man i had never heard of vortex. i never really cared about anything much but hondas really. ever since i first saw the NSX back in like 93 or 94. i was 10 or so and i just remember seeing the only one of the "super cars" without a turbo and i was like hey this company has its **** together.

but i am definitly expanding my horizons now. i just think that hondas will always be myt first love.

your best bet is the quantum syncro setup in the A2 chassis (85-92 golf/jetta) .... much tighter fit in the A1 Rabbit chassis. You change everything over and it will work ... that crazy dude in the UK did it by having two motors in his GTI, one in the front and one in the rear and they were VR6 motors ...
