Can this be fixed without going through the trouble of changing the gasket? Is there some kind of sealant that can be put around the edges of the gasket?

If it is the upper gasket, its not a big deal to replace. Takes about 15-20 minutes to take off, replace the gasket and re-attach the intake plenum. The lower gasket requires a little more effort. A vacuum leak like that will cause more than a high idle, though.. you will probably be running pretty rich and have a crappy idle as well. rough, etc. Possibly throwing EGR codes as well.
