Default rip off ... ?

Alright I have been calling around and getting estimates to see how much I would need to save up to swap an engine into my car - so far, best price is $800!!! I mean, this is REALLY pissing me off because it requires some minor wiring (obd1 conversion) I am looking at the D16Z6, I was really looking to do an auto to manual conversion - but it ends up I might not cuz this price is WAY to expensive

does anyone know any shops around NFL, SFL, SGA, NGA that has good prices and can maybe do this swap for me ? I don't have the motor because I am still unsure of what I am going to do

please help me out, my car also has to be converted to MPFI which I heard is not difficult at all

that is my problem, my parents don't support me one bit when it comes to working on my car - I would have to move out to work on my car (especially something like swapping an engine!)

how much slower are automatics than manuals? for daily driving (98% of what this car will be used for) - it's more of a beach bitch for me, but I heard that sticks get better gas milage and they are funner to drive ... cuz my d15 has got to go, NO acceleration at all, no top end, no midrange... just too slow

would this d16z6 auto with a dx tranny take me in the mid 15 range? with basic mods i/h/e maybe low 15s? (car weight 2100)

800 sounds about right , no shop is gonna do it any cheaper.
do your swap at a friends if you cant do it at your house which will save you alot of money, and you will learn alot more doing it yourself

well, if your saying $800 is about right ... why is my friend getting an estimate on an SR20 for $900? the swap difficulty of a direct bolt in, and pretty simple wiring vs one with tons of wiring conversions, known for having a lot of tech problems when started only a $100 more?... it just doesn't make sense to me, they quoted me the exact same price on b series motors too

haha damn, go b then. I'd say just do it somewhere else. Manuals are more fun to drive, but if you're a lazy driver or just don't care that much, manuals aren't worth it. They only get better gas mileage by about 20% anyway, and if you're a sloppy shifter or a redline ***** then you won't notice the increased mileage anyhow.

20%, is this a true statement? you make "20% sound small, that is 1/5th of a 100, .2 ... is this what you meant? or did you mistakingly mean 2%? I just heard they do get better gas milage... b series is too expensive, I know it puts out more power - but if I was going b series, I would hit up a 92 + civic, mounts **** me off and cost too much money IMO

yeah manual is 20% more efficient than autos, so in a 11g tank you'll still have 2.2 gallons left after an auto is empty, assuming everything is constant

1/5th of 100 is 20. What school did you go to so I can make sure not to send my kids there?

Keep in mind that you are looking at two wiring conversions. First you have to wire for mpfi and then you have to wire for OBD1. I think that is where a big part of the labor is going. These may not be very difficult wiring conversion but they are very tedious and time consuming.

Just food for thought.

Yep thats about right. Shops around here charge 1,500 for the swap. So 800 ain't to bad. And its alittle more work swaping it into a dx automatic.

If your engine is still in good mechanical shape, take it in steps. Do the MPFI swap first, since you'll need to do it for any engine you end up swapping in anyway. You may be suprised at the gains just an MPFI swap gives you. And on as tight of a budget as you seem to be on, it may be enough. If not, I would recomend doing an Si manual tranny swap before doing a Z6 with your auto. the people above are mentioning the gas milage differences, but not really the power differences between the auto and the manual. about 30% of your horsepower is wasted due to slippage in an automatic tranny. A D15 with MPFI and an Si trans makes for a peppy little car, It's not going to win any huge races mind you. but it will give you the power you need to get in front of that truck as you're merging on to the freeway. And if you have any money left, you can start adding bolt-ons... I/H/E (you'll most likely do the intake when you do the MPFI because the stock DPFI intake tube won't fit anymore) This combo can potentially get you into the 16's... which is where a lot of sportier cars come stock. If that's not enough for you, save your money and do it right with a B-swap or a very well built D.

OK is this price your talking about for putting in the motor, doing the MPFI and obd1 wiring, and the auto to manual coversion with the wiring for that as well? If your talking about them doing all of it for $800 I would say that is a really good price considering how many different things there going to be doing to your car. IMO its a decent price if you think that that is too expensive and you cant do it at your parents house rent a storage shed for like $30-60 bucks a month and bring it there and do it yourself that way it wouldnt cost you as much.

automatics suck when you have a car with low hp and touque...An aftermarket torque converter with a higher stall will make a auto faster in 1/4 mile..I guess some company makes for hondas now. I could notdrive a auto mato crx or hatch. It would blow driving a car that begs to be tossed in turns and have it be bo-legged cause of a auto. I feel ya on 'rents not allowing you to swap a engine yourself. my dads a *** like that. Since I live on my own and have a no $$$ he has to when my engine dies or loan me a car HAHA. My advice it get a manual and swap the engine at a friends house.

lol ok you guys are misunderstanding this ... $800 for the ENGINE swap alone, I am supplying the engine, and buying ALL the required parts for the mpfi swap, the engine swap, and all the other bs stuff...

they want an EXTRA $800 for the auto to manual swap (given that I supply all the parts for this too)

this brings a total of $1600 WITHOUT the price of the engine - so a total of about $2500 for the whole "d series swap" - IMO that is a RIP off, I would pay the $800 for an auto to manny swap + engine swap... but not $800 for both

I understood what you were saying, 800 for the hole swap would be good. If they want another 800 just becasue its an automatic, thats crap. But 800 to swap in an engine is pretty good.

hahahahahahaha 4 hours for the swap? What are you smoking! If you can do it in 4 hours, you the man! You know how much work there is involved in taking out the engine? You complaining about $800 labor? They putting in the engine for you, doing the mpfi conversion for you, and OBD 1 conversion, and you complaining? I have done 3 gsr swaps (92-95 civics), 1 d16 r+r (del sol), B16a swap (CRX), and trust me 4 hours won't do it! Well let me start by telling you what has to come out

1. remove splash shields
2. drain coolant
3. disconnect battery
4. disconnect upper+lower radiator hoses
5.. disconnect heater hoses
6. disconnect fuel lines
7. disconnect wiring harness
8. remove radiator
9. remove ac compressor
10. remove axles
11. remove rear mount
12. remove side mounts
13. remove upper side mounts
14. attach engine to hoist
15. lift out engine

This is only the remove procedure!

You expect someone to do this for $250?
