Can i get some fellow R owners thoughts?
Im thinking about getting this Estoril Blue 98 M3 with 44k miles on it..he was asking 26,500 and over the last month have got him down to $23k. Car has no sunroof or power seets but has harmon K sound, ugraded m wheels, rear spoiler, and is really in good condition.. Private party value on the car is $25,500 on kbb
Sounds like a very good deal. Definatly get it checked out by a reputable shop and if everything is good, I'd buy it. Estoril Blue rocks.
be careful with E36';s though i had one , they tend to have elec probs. they mighta worked it out by 98, but something to look for . . . oh yea, i have been finding them around me low $20k, i didnt see where your at but in the Tristate you can get em close to nothing now a days
you can find a 98 with less than 50k miles on it with good options for low 20's? hmm doesnt sound right...Im in oregon and the car is in seattle and its the best deal i have found..

jump on it then , but have someone check on it ebfore buying it , they do have their quarks, i sold my bimmer for my R becuase of that
I'm a car dealer so take it for what it's worth. e36s are good cars,m's are driven hard though. I see a LOT of them at the track and they rarley break. Make sure and have it checked out by a BMW shop. Here are a couple of things to look at
1) make sure it has the new water pump fan.old one was plastic and breaks off and burns the head
2) check the VANOS system and make sure it isn't wearing the cams...it is a BMW VTEC...not as good as Honda, but still works...they are prone to fail at 60k miles if not properly maintained.
3) I would bet you a whole dollar the rear trans mount is bad and needs replacemet, and check the thermostt houseing and make sure it's not cracked
just a few things to check

i forgot to add that the car still has one left on its extended warranty, the guy bought it certified and said it has till 02/04
yeah i drove my buddies 98 with only 10k miles on it and it felt really good..No need to wind up the rpms to get power it was very torquey and handle awesome..
I'd buy it if I had the money
Friend of mine has a 99 Estoril Blue M3 with a Jim Conforti 'Shark' chip. That car is a blast to drive!
One thing you have to think about is everything on that car is sooo much more expensive compared to Hondas. Everything from OEM replacement parts to aftermarket parts, tires, etc.

Do you plan on modifying/tuning the engine? If so, then consider a 95 OBDI M3 instead. They go as low as 13K and are considered to be more desirable because of the lack of OBDII. BTW, the price is decent for a car with that kind of mileage. Expect to see E36 M3's depreciate in value even further though since they are E36's.

I'm surprised Reid didn't agree since he'd suggested this to others at one time as well!
hehe ... maybe it's time to lock this one too!

Let's say I just made a startling discovery about some part, but titled my thread "yo check out dis homies".
It would be useful to no one who is using the search function.
Well, you won't miss the sunroof or power seats
.
Check out this month's issue of European Car. They did an extensive article on the E36 and what to look out for if you're in the market for one.

I didn't know they even offered the E36 M3 without a sunroof other than the '95 Lightweight. That's pretty nice dude, lighter weight = nicer on the track. As said before, check out that issue of European Car, pretty comprehensive.
The reason the lack of a sunroof is an issue is because it affords the driver more headroom, more so than the fact that it is lighter and stiffer.
