MTL stands for Manual Transmission Lube! why would you want to put that in your diff??? Granted I'm not a Honda guy but I would say Redline 75W-90 gear oil is the one you want.

Actually you would want MTL fluid for a honda diff. You'll have to realize that our Hondas have transaxle(Front Wheel drive). Unlike your BMWs(Rear Wheel drive) where there is a tranny bolted the motor and from that a driveshaft that goes to the rear diff. Our tranny housing has both the all the gears and LSD inside. So they must use the same fluid. You can't use gear lube because gear lube is too heavy and too thick to get in between the gears so they had to design the LSD to use MTF also.
The only reason why redline might be bad for a LSD is when you have a Clutch type LSD. Clutch type uses friction plates. Those plates need rub againest each to create the LSD action. So you need a oil that is not too slippery or the friction plates will not work well. Also that is why you need to rebuild Clutch Type more often then Gear type LSD. The friction plates wear out.

the only time i wouldn't use Honda MTF or Redline MTL is if you had a clutch type LSD in where then you would have to use dere specified fluid for it. (<~~~ Using Redline and Love It )

This is quite obvious.....

MTL is fine in your R. I used it for a good 80,000km with no problems. Some on this board don't like it, but I thought it was fine.

Good explanation. What if the LSD wears out? do you have to replace the entire unit? How about lock up % upgrades and ring gear changes? What about heat dissipation? What is the f/r weight distribution?

Hopefully this link will answer some of your questions.

Well if your LSD wears out you can buy rebuild kits so you don't have to replace the whole unit. I don't know much about upgrading the LSD but I believe if you can get more aggressive pressure plates. The ring gear is what we at HT refer to as the final drive. It is bolted to the LSD and what you can do is by changing the gear to a differnt one like the JDM final drive you can increase your acceration but at the expensice of top speed. Basically it shortens your gear ratio. Well I don't think that heat will be a problem because I don't know of any aftermarket company that makes transmission cooler for type Rs. As for you question about F\R, basically it is the differance in weight from the front and the rear that is usually written as a percentage. For example the Type R has a 62%/38%. It means that 62% of the weight of the car is supported by the front suppension and 38% of the weight is support by the rear suppension. It also means that most of the weight is located in the front half of the car instead of the rear half of the car.

Ok I gotta a question is the JDM 96 spec LSD different type? I once read on a site that it was, i posted up here ages ago but no one answered.

Is there a simple way of finding out? I am trying to find the URL where I read it I will dig it out.

here it is http://ff-squad.com/JDM-LSD.htm

According to my resources, these were 'special order' LSD's for JDM 96-97 ITR integra's only. No other countries would receive this optional LSD, only Japan. The cost was about twice as much as a the common Gear type found in all ITR's and CTR's. One odd thing though, Honda of Japan does NOT have this optional LSD type for 98+ ITR's! We're (EB & I) pretty sure it fits in 98+ ITR tranny's though...
