what's the difference between y7 and y8? I want to get one to bolt onto my A6 head...possible?

It will fit. There may be some problems with the TPS sensor. One is a 2 wire and the other is a 3 wire. Most people when swapping the y8 mainfold onto their y7s swap the throttle body from the y7 onto the y8 manifold. This helps with sensor problems since you are using the same sensors. In reverse tho, I would assume it would be preferable to have a Y8 throttle body but the TPS sensor on the y8 is on the manifold so by using the y8 TB with the y7 manifold you would not have a TPS sensor.

I am pretty sure this is accurate.

No... the y7 is ***.. The y8 is the one to have.
