Default AT trany clunks when it's cold?

my 94 accord EX AT tranny always give me big clunk when i shift from P to D4 in the morning or afternoon when i'm off from work. basically it clunks big time when i move the shift gear to D4 when the ride hasn't warmed up yet...

however, it wasn't like that though.... it used to just adjust the rpm to lower level and started to change the gear to D4 automatically but now days, it just keeps up at the high RPM(when the car hasn't warmed up yet) and changes the gear and the tranny clunks....

what would be the problem? try to change the tranny oil?

I remember a while back I was at the dealership and there was a lady there with the same complaint. The service manager told her that when she puts it into drive she does not give it a second to catch at a complete stop before going. For example, your backing out of a space and your still moving back a little when you put it in drive and go. Or you put the car into drive and hit the gas immediately not allowing the car to sit in drive to stabilize for a second. Something like that. I don't really know how to describe it. He may be full of it but the logic makes sense to me.

change the transmission fluid first to see if that helps.

Yes, what he said is correct, but I remember when I had an auto, it did the same thing, and I was standing on the brakes. Anyways, I never gave it gas until the tranny had clunked, then I took off.
You can always change your tranny oil, it couldn't hurt, but it won't do a lot better. It seems as the tranny takes age that it doesn't operate as smoothly, and you'll soon notice that shifts between gears get rougher too. But it don't necessarily man your tranny's going bad anywhere soon. Mine started giving those symptoms at about 125,000 miles, and I drove with the same trany up to 365,000 miles.

So don't worry about it. Just make sure you change your fluids every 30,000 miles.

change with fresh, high-quality fluid. Honda OEM or Valvoline (check your app).
