dont laugh. I dont know how to do an oil change on my 5th gen civic coupe. I've been taking it to the honda dealer for $30 every 3g miles but it gets too be expensive and i think i should know how to change my own oil by now. Would someone be willing to help me out and give me detalied step by step instructions and what all i need to buy for an oil change? like do i need a new oil fitler and if so, what kind? Sorry for such a dumb post, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

filters are too hard to get to if you are lazy like me, just take it to an oil change place...if you wanna just go out and buy like 3 qts of oil depending on what u use, and a oil filter...1st drain the oil from the oil pan, 2cnd change filter, 3rd fill er up with oil....whaLa!!!!

 

I'll give you a brief overview just incase the search function yields nothing.
a. Raise car. I usually just jack up the left side tow hook.
b. Position oil container under oil pan.
c. Undo oil pan drain bolt.
d. Remove oil cap from valve cover.
e. Remove oil filter, take new filter and apply oil to rubber seal.
f. Install new oil filter.
g. Clean drain plug bolt and washer or install new bolt & washer.
e. Fill engine with new oil and screw oil cap back on.
P.S. Make sure you do this when the engine is cold.

 

1. go to the store and buy 3 or 4 quarts of oil

2. look under your car in the front and unscrew the oil cap thing

3. watch some t.v. while the oil drains out

4. screw the cap back on, add 3 quarts of oil, check the oil level with the dipstick

5. pat yourself on the back and have a

if you want to change the oil filter wich you should do every once in a while, it should be under the car somewhere, just go the store and tell them your car, they'll look it up on the computer and give u the right filter......take out the old one & put in the new one.

run your car for about 10 minutes before changing the oil. This lets the oil heat up, thin out, and drain easier.

I let the oil drain for about 10-15 minutes before I change the filter. This way I'm not dropping a quart of oil from the filter onto myself.

remove oil cap from valve cover first and then drain...
helps speed the process of oil drainage.
its better to jack the car evenly or else some oil may be left in oil pan.
always check for leaks... and make sure the rubber o-ring didnt come off the
old filter.

heres what i did to change my oil today


1) get in car
2) drive to honda dealership
3) hand service dude coupon for 19.99 oil change
4) sit in Honda element for 25mins and sip on a mt. dew
5) pay for oil change
6) drive home

 

thats good and all but the point of this thread was that he wanted to do it himself

 

good idea is to fill the oil filter till the oil soaks into it and top if off, that way, when u start ur engine, a shot of air doesnt go through your motor, it helps in reliability in the long run

 

I just can't trust anyone to change my oil, ever since the time some guy tried to tell me that I needed a transmission fluid change because my tranny fluid was brown. He was like see this, your fluid is brown it should be red like this. Then I asked him, " Do you think I'm a dumbass, or are you a dumbass?" Honda 5spd's use 10w30 motor oil for tranny fluid for all you dealer bishes. I wonder how many honda owners the guy has done this to??

 

Hate to tell you this, but that makes YOU the "dumbass." You are supposed to be running GL-4 gear oil such as Honda MTF, Redline MTL, NEO 7W, et cetera. 10W30 MOTOR OIL should only be used in an emergency, according to Honda Corp. and replaced with GL-4 GEAR OIL ASAP. All that brown **** in your oil is rust from the gears eating themselves up...

Adding to this thread....It is a good idea to go to your local Honda dealership, and stock up on filters. Every aftermarket oil filter(from fram to no name) I have seen leaks somewhat. Honda oil filters will not leak provided that they are torqued down correctly.

The best filter to use is stock honda because it holds oil in it after the car has sat for a while. If not then use a filter from the local parts store part # ph3593a for standard or tg for the tough guard which you won't need unless you 4x4 often or live in the middle of the forrest.
Like everybody else has said
jack the car up
unscrew oil cap
unscrew oil drain plug (located back side bottom of oil pan)
drain oil
put drain plug back on
unscrew oil filter located 1/2 way up the back of the engine (cant miss it, it looks just like the one you bought from the store).
make sure old oil seal came off with filter put some oil on new seal and screw on
lower the car, put about 3 quarts of oil in, start the car let it run for about 10-15 sec
turn off check oil level, add more accordingly.
Top hole on dipstick is full, bottom hole indicates 1 quart low, unless your like me where i'm using a dx dipstick on my engine so the bottom hole indicates full not the top hole (go ahead and ask me how i found that out)....
drive the car around the block a few times then park it, check for any oil leaks after a few min.....(just incase)
then go in the house and wash all the oil off your arms and out of your hair ..... dawn works good

 

hoe many quarts are needed for the jdm d15b (vx block, z6 head)? and would mobil 1 or mobil semi-sinthetic be recommended?

I remember one time when I was changing the oil in my civic, it took me 2 days to get the freaking oil filter off. I had had it done at a castrol the time before, cause my friend worked there, but I decided to do it myself next time. They put the filter on so tight I couldn't budge it with my hands, so I managed to get a filter wrench on it, but that didn't work, so I punched a screwdriver through it. All that did was tear around the filter, but no loosening. I had so far been working on it for like an hour and a half and I was getting quite pissed, so I threw my screwdriver in the woods by my house and went in.

I came back out an the next day, spent the first half of the day looking for the screwdriver, found it and headed back under the car. For whatever reason it came right off when I pounded the screwdriver in it again, I was pissed.

 

Er... you do realize that "Made in Canada" OEM oil filters are made by Fram, don't you???

 

jus add it til u reach the line on the dipstick..usually for most hondas, well tegs and civics, its usually no more than 5..well from my experience at jiffy lube..
another thing noone said was to put oil around the oil ring..make sure u do that so it doesn't seal it on too tight when it heats up

and about the tranny thing..i guess it would be more like they were both dumbasses cuz they were both wrong..

 

or you can look in the manual..I beleive ex takes 3.5.

Anyway, as far as filters I like Bosch, as it does what I need/want it to do...

Well anyway, good luck changing your oil for the first time... It's nothing to worry about, but I have been changing my oil for a long time now and always manage to spill somehow or another when getting the filter off... I suppose I should let it sit longer to let it all drain out...
