which turbo kit for 92-95 ex coupe?
yo im new to this board, and i have done a lot of reading on turbo kits. i really dont know a lot about turbo systems, but i have come to like the A'Pexi kit. i dont know if it comes with a bov, or if that is really something u need or just for coolness, but i see some other kits like f max that has a wastegate and bov. i like the apexi kit cuz it has a large turbo, think it was 19, and the GReddy kit has a smaller one. any help or guidance is greatly apreciated, thanks
Either get HKS or APEX'i. Not a big fan of Greddy turbo. But i say APEX'i i never seen a Cpe w/ there turbo. Be different. What about XS, Rev Hard, Turbonetics, and Garret. All good companys. Jus my .02.

Alright, having weighed the options myself, I asked alot of questions about the two, and done alot of reading on the two. Now, I do not have first hand experience with either, so take what I am telling you for what its worth.
The APEXi kit has a slightly larger turbo than the GReddy, and it is a full ball bearing center section. These characteristics help it to support more power in the long run, and minimize turbo lag respectively (very simplified, but you get the point). A few articles and other literature have highly touted this kit as one of, if not the best kit for the D series. The biggest downside of this kit, is the cost. For an APEXi turbo kit alone, you will spend at least 2000, if you buy it new. It gets worse, the bare kit does not come with fuel management, it is optional and usually runs about 225-300 (also note, some places do not sell kit and fuel manag. seperately) If you want an intercooler, and APEXi's specifically, you are looking at another 600-800 bucks.
The GReddy kit has been the old stand by. It is proven, and the quality seems to be top notch. This kit should also provide low lag boost, as it is also a small turbo. People have gotten impressive numbers with this kit. (VTC_boostless_Civic comes to mind, pushing around 200hp to the wheels and touching 13's last I read.) It is smaller than the APEXi, so it will reach its limits sooner. However, it is alot cheaper. The kit usually runs around 1500 and comes with some fuel management (although many have said it to be "crappy, but gets the job done")
Ultimately its up to you, how fast do you want to be, and how much do you want to spend.

Just a side note, from examples I have seen on this and other message boards with people running the GReddy kit. I get the feeling that you will max out your stock engine and fuel system components before you really max out the GReddy turbo. Meaning, if you take this kit to its limits, you are stretching the engine to its limits as well, where tuning and internal work may become issues.
thanks for all this info, i am really starting to learn the complexity of the subject. is there anything else i should know, or any other opinions of the kits?

The more research you do, and the more shopping around you do, you will realize that you may be spending more money than you originally thought. Just keep researching, keep shopping, and hopefully through that effort, you can minimize cost and mistakes.
And finally, in my experience working on cars so far (not that it is a particularly vast amount), something ALWAYS goes wrong. Be prepared for it, and have patience. That being said, leave yourself some flexibility for down time, in case you can't get your car up and running right away.

i helped a good friend install a greddy kit in his ex not too long ago. we've never done anything like it before and it took us less than four-hours. it's pretty user friendly, no real tuning necessary. his car was appreciably faster, it's a 14b, not the biggest but if you just want your car to hang w/ other modded cars its worth it for the price. he then got a free FMU he installed and we also got a good deal on a used eclip intercooler we put on. his car can hang w/ my civic b18b manual and his was an auto.

I will give you an opinion, they are all to expensive, if you have time, and are creative you can make your own kit, check out my website.

when you get the turbo you gotta remember theres gonna more stuff your gonna need. i dont think you wanna run it on a stock d16z6, you might need to do some rebuilding first depending on how much boost you wanna run, plus d16 isnt really built for a turbo so theres a chance u might blow it if you run it too hard.
And dont forgot with the turbo your gonna eventually want gauges, upgrade your fuel system, ECU, etc.... all leads to spending more $$, so make sure you know how much you can afford before you just put the turbo on it.

We have a member on our board with a stock d16z6 hitting 242 to the wheels (its higher now)
You dont have to rebuild..

greddy kit daily driven @ 10psi.....40,000 miles on turbo....155,000 miles with car and motor ( this is in a 94 ex coupe )
13.8 @ 101.69 was my best time....60' 2.21
I haven't been to the dyno so I don't know the hp numbers.
Oh....its a stock block...only problems have been a clutch (obviously) and a headgasket.
