I used WD40 first, let it sit for a while, then wiped it off. Then I put on the lithium grease. I do the same thing when waxing the chain on my bike... WD40, clean it off, then spray the wax on.

use WD-40 to clean..
use White Lithium Grease to Lubricate...
what I do is open the sunroof and spray it down w/ WD-40 let it sit for a while so it dissolves the dirty and grime then I get a cloth or rag (make sure you don't care if it gets and stays black even after washing) and wipe up all the dirt, grease, grime, and WD-40.. now w/ the rails clean I apply white lithium grease to the sunroof track/rail guides and I start the car (so to not drain the battery) and I open and close the sunroof about 10 times so that the white lithium grease gets on the track/rail of the sunroofs full range of motion... I did this about once every 6 months to a year and my sunroof stayed smooth...
I also had a sunroof module w/ my alarm and it would get annoying before I learned to clean it how the sunroof would close about 1/2 way and the module "thought" the sunroof was closed (because it was getting stuck/excessive current draw)... after cleaning it regularly I had no problems at all.. its probably better for your motor too since its struggling/straining less..
so WD-40 to clean and White Lithium grease to lube..
you can buy both at Autozone or most any auto parts store..

Like they said, you can pretty much pick it up at any autoparts store. It might come in a long *** tube. Pretty cheap.
I actually did the lube thing to my sunroof today and i didn't even bother to clean it off before i did it. But thats because i didn't think to. So i'm sure that might be a more proper way to maintain the sunroof, but mine used to make ALOT of noise before, but now its smooth and quiet as hell.

The grease that the dealership put on my sunroof rails a couple years back looks like that dark green Honda Urea Grease that's used for lubing up the bearings on a clutch. I've never messed with it and it seems to work fine.

WD40 is a water based oil that can cause rust, your better off with lithium grease.

Never knew WD-40 was bad, where can I get lithium grease and what does it come in? Bottle?
