Guys, i've got about 105,000miles on the 95 EG. Now all what i have done to her is a AEM CAI and Greddy EVO. Nothing major at all. So anyway, my idle when fully warmed up makes some strange noises. It's kind of like a knocking sound....it's very hard to hear though. It's not a consistent sound. It's kind of irregular and it sounds like its something internal, but maybe its just something shaking???
Anyone have any clue ???
I wanted to go turbo with this engine, but i may just buy a D16 shortblock and build that...

how much you want? what condition is it in?

 

does it sound like a light ticking noise? if it does, it might just be your cam timing, which is normal. but the cam timing ticking sound is normal and consistant, and since you sed its not consistant, then i dunno what it might be.

 

Well lets say this. I can only hear it from about 600rpms to 1,000, then it isn't audible. Meaning, either my exhaust is loud and covering it up, or it actually does go away...
Its not a regular pattern. It's almost regular, but not quite....
Any other ideas?

 

Does it sound like a random misfire? Does your idle rpm change?

 

I dont think its a misfire. I mean i hear the sounds like maybe 2-4 times or so each second! Very quite like i said. Almost inaudible...but to the trained ear anything can be heard

Maybe you have a rattle somewhere. Header to exhast piping? is the intake loose? muffler loose?

clutch problems>---- flywheel bolts or bearings?

 

Maybe one or more of your valves is making the noise? All eight of my valves make a cruddy noise at idle, yes eight valves, i'm a loser rollin in a cx motor.

 

it's probably a rattle. I would also do a compression test.

and open up your distributor to make sure nothing is loose inside.

as for the shortblock $100 + s/h. UPS is usually about $55 bucks.
I'd have to get your zip code and find out for sure if you are seriously interested.

 

I've got an auto, so you can rule the cluth probs out.

It's say its more of a knock or clunking sound. It does sound like somethings loose and shaking.

It may be some part of the exhaust. Because at 600 rpm my engine/exhaust is vibrating (i can feel it inside the car) but its been doing that forever.

did you check the heat sheild ?

 

Don't forget to tell him about the bad piston ring in the short block.

 

I just had this same problem with a d16y7 and the thing sounded exactly how your describing. Fine at idle, hit the gas lightly, makes noise, hit it hard, no noise. I haven't found out what it is but I do know that the engine went and now my new one is comming tomorrow. I ran a compression test on it and it resulted in about 50% of normal compression. My advice is to have it checked out SOON. I wish I had.

 

Are you serious? Damnit, i hope i havent lost compression. I think my car runs as strong as ever. I dont have to hit the gas hard to make it go away. if i tap the pedal just to rev it over 1000rpms you can't hear it....
maybe i'll try the poor man's compression test and pull each plug, one by one?

Piston slap. I'm sure someone can explain much better than I can, but I guess it has something to do with the engine's clearances loosening up after it's gotten kind of old. Tends to only happen when the engine is cold so I'm not sure if that's any help.

Also, I've heard that noises like that could be from dirty injectors (ticking), so you might think about getting some of that injector-cleaner ****.

just clearing the air of any obvious.. You checked the oil, RIGHT? If its low or flat black like slips, it can ping. Your description was a unspecific. You said it was hard to hear, and thats exactly what this problem can sound like as well. Hope compression is good for you bro.

 

Whens the last time you have your valves adjusted ? I would do that first and see what happens.

 

Hey guys. yeah i check my oil regularly and change it 2500-3000 miles.

As far as my valve getting adjusted, its been a LONG time. I'd say anywhere from 15000-30,000 miles. And i really havent been that easy on my car lately. I just dont see how the valves would make that type of noise. Its not a tapping/ticking type sound. Who knows though, i'm no expert!

yeah, i'll jack her up this weekend when i go home from college. It could be so many things....
Someone posted something about the hood rattling, but now i dont see that post anymore? maybe someone deleted it. thats a good idea actually, because the sound that a hood would make if it was shaking, sounds almost EXACTLY like what i'm hearing inside the car....

My car started making this noise. D16y8, and then not too much longer after that i was going up a hill around 3000 rpm and boom a rod broke. I have a feeling its initially started with a spun rod bearing......happened to my friends h23 also.....yikes.
