people have said it can be done, and some say it can't..i'm gonna be swaping out my valve train and don't want to remove my head.is there a special springs compressor needed? please let me know!!
most people buy the snap on valve spring compressor, a bit pricy (~$110), i belive lisle also makes a comparable one for a bit cheaper. keep the valves up with compresed air.

swapping springs, retainers --not the valves, i know the head has to come off for the valves
this one is a little cheaper than snap on i believe

i used the snap on and just put my pistons at tdc and worked on them that way. 1-4,2-3 and it took only about an hour and a half. no rope or compressed air needed.
Are you rotating the engine without the cams? I'm looking at these tools and i'm not sure how to use them.

Would this be something similar to the tool posted above?

rope thats funny. I knew this ol' timer that did it that way.
I have been thinking about making my own tool.
I like to pull the head so if you drop a retainer you can get it back

Buy the snap on tool, worth every penny, I've used it many times, payed for itself already. Very very very simple to swap springs/ret w/out taking off the head.

hehe .. technicly, you could probably take out the valves w/o pulling the head ... think about it!
. Must be a biatch the reinstall the valves afterwards though.
no you couldn't. look at a block you'll see why

Definately not the smartest way to do it, but it just might work!
cant remove the pistons from underneath. 100% not possible. The snap on link didnt work for me, but that other link isnt the tool i would recommend. The one we use is much simpler. Just use a hammer and the tool, and the tool catches all the keepers because its magnetic.
