HELP! My new Kicker components 'pop' on low bass notes!
Hey,
I hooked up my new Kicker k6.2 components to my home stereo to test them out (using the crossovers and everything) and the damn things make a loud snap or popping noise when you turn it up at all. They are rated for 75 watt rms, or 150watt max so my stereo is only putting out like 30watts. It looks like the cone is physically snapping into the back metal on the speaker everytime it goes back.
I have no clue whats up... I thought that these were good components? Does anyone have any clue what the problem could be? Could it have to do with im hooking it up to my home stereo, opposed to a car?
Thanks

Your home stereo is clipping. It is designed for 8ohm loads. That speaker will be about 4 ohms. I would not recommend this at all.
STOP WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE DOING NOW!!!!
The speakers are fine....a home reciever will play the full 20hz-20khz bandwith you are playing notes below the xover point of the speakers and are prob also playing the speakers "free air" with the low driver not mounted in a baffle
or enclosure....that slaping noise is the voicecoil reaching its mechanical limits.
If the speakers are new they will sound great when installed....I know you may not have known, but its stunts like this that cause peeps to say XYZ BRAND blows ***.
Now go play nice.

"I hooked up 3 woofers in parallel to my amp, and it blew....this brand sucks!"
Good job bro! You may have ruined a good set of speakers.

guys, the speakers are fine. I hooked them up to a headunit and they dont pop... but i did expect them to go higher without distortion. Ive got the stereo rigged up in my room to a 12v.
Sorry if my inexperience pissed anyone off. I guess I will live and learn.

If you want them louder, get an amp and give them the rated rms power. A headunit will not do much, especially for a speaker that is rated for 75 watts. Normally speakers with high rms ratings are less sensitive, so you may get less sound with a headunit connected to them.
But shouldnt you be able to turn the headunit up all the way without distortion if the speakers are rated for it? These speakers are 8-75watt rms, 150watt peak. I know the headunit is 25rms, 50watt max... does that mean if you turn it up over 1/2 way it will start to distort? I guess thats about where its happening.

Ok, well I wasnt trying to be a complete moron. Before I did it I checked the headunits impedance, and it said 4-8 and I checked my home stereo, and i could switch it down to 8 so I thought it would be fine. I just didnt know enough about this stuff... hopefully the speakers dont have any damage im unaware about.
Ok, not to make me sound like an even bigger idiot but a couple days ago when I first got the components I was mounting them in some kickpanels... I was using my cordless drill screwing them in place and the drill slipped... the bit made a little dimple in the cone. It didnt puncture it, just made a little dent.
I just took a pic to illustrate it...
Luckily the damn thing is titanium on the outside so it didnt hurt it more. My question is how much will this screw up the sound? Thanks

It looks fine. Buy a cordless screwdriver, less rpm's than a drill and less chance of destroying stuff. My cordless drill ownz screw heads.
