Default A Glaring Concern: SoCal AAA HID Article from Westways Magazine

I found these articles in a AAA member magazine called Westways, available to AAA members in the Southern California area.

Maybe somebody will like reading them. The articles are also linked up in my bio.

i hope they ban hid's they were originally designed for rally use and offroad use only. in those situations i can see having them but for everyday driving they are a nuscance. my bulbs and fogs put out enough light for me even with the glaring hids and high pointed headlights of trucks. **** hids

I guess you've never driven a car with them. IMHO all HID headlight should employ a projector-type lens that produces a sharp cutoff. This type of light housing when aimed properly produces no more glare than a halogen projector headlight.

Strange...every single HID-equipped vehicle both oncoming or directly behind me have never annoyed me. The only vehicles that have completely blinded me while driving are standard Halogen-bulb'd SUV's and trucks.

Thanks for the read.

My HID's were so mis-aligned that it used to light up the over-head signs on the freeways... that was until MTK Commmander came by and aligned them for me.

OEM Hid applications never really bother me. The only nuisance they have is that they distract me because I'm drooling over them.

I think many of the public's assumptions are that every single BLUE headlight is HID (ricers, what not). And to add to this, misaligned HIDS, or HID lighting not designed for HALOGEN projectors are very bad also (like mine!).

But anyway, HID lighting is amazing. Drive an Audi, BMW, or LEXUS and you'll see.

Anyway, that was a very good article!

I doubt they will ever get banned because they are safer than halogens. I think in a year or two when all the hype surronding HIDs and converting to HIDs are gone everyone will get used to it. I personally do not have HIDs but I don't have any problems with them

Factory equipped HID's in car do not bother me if they are driving behind me (I have tint) or if they are on the opposite side of traffic.

What bothers me is SUV's with HID's and big trucks with regular bulbs. Those reflect right on my side view and rear view mirrors.

I don't see a change in law though. HID's were introduced in 1996 and more and more cars are becoming equipped with them from the factory.

Heck, even Celica's now come with HID's, same with the new STI coming out soon.

Mercedes have dual HID's.

Celicas have HIDs from the factory?

The new bimmers have Bi-Xenon HIDs. Meaning both low and high beams

Let me rephrase, the new 03 Celicas have HID's as an optional accessory.

The new Nissan Murano has dual HID's too.

HID's are the most talked item about on h-t.com lately.

Skafia: Does $375 gets you the HID kit and hid projectors?

Celicas have HIDs from the factory?

The new bimmers have Bi-Xenon HIDs. Meaning both low and high beams

thats bs ive never been bothered by an HID equipped vehicle behind me. The only thing is i like to stare at the prism it puts off and i want some on my teg that is it. Theyre brighter but still dont blind u like a regular halogens will. Funny thing is whenever me and my friends are rollin thru town. We are always kinda nervous when we see cops cuz they like to always **** with us. Last night we wer just comin off the freeway and there is a long straight before town, and we always haul *** down that strip. There is no residential area and no people there out of all the times ive drove down it. Well we all started takin off, and there is 1 oncoming car in the other lane i noticed it cuz of the HIDs. Well as soon as it gets close enough i see its a damn cop car! we all slowed down then pulled into the gas station and we wer all trippin out cuz of that cop car with the HIDs. So those of you who are paranoid when u drive around dont overlook the cars with HIDs anymore haha.

i have driven in a car with hid's and always felt like they were lacking in brightness granted they do flood the area with mor elight it isn't as bright as some halogens out there. also the cutoff line of hid's is annoying not to mention how unbearably briht they are when a huge *** truck equipped withthem pulls up right behind you. hid's are for offroad use period. halogens are for on road use. anyone who upgraded their headlights wasted their money becasue hey will soon be illegal. trust me if enough people complain they will have to stop manufacturing them.

all you people who are complaining about HID must have been in cars with NON FACTORY HID. of course if you put HID in normal civic headlights or even OEM integra halogen PROJECTORS, you will not get proper cut off or any actually good performance. y

ou guys are riding in cars without proper Glare Shields, focal points, etc etc. off road use only? factory lexus vehicles never blind anyone. you guys cant just rag on HID cuz u rode in a car that had a bad HID set up anyway. your projectors in your oem usdm teg headlights are not made for hid, period. how bad they suck varies. ive got friends with HID in these projectors, its ok but its no where near the quality as a oem hid projector retrofit, such as MTK Kommander's bmw retrofit into his nissan 240 headlights.

dude are you even talking about the same thing as us? There is NO halogen headlight bulb as bright as a standard Phillips 4300K 35W D2S xenon headlight bulb. The brightest standard halogen bulb is 9005 60W, 1700 lumens, while the Phillips D2S puts out 3200 lumens. And to my knowledge there are no semi-trucks w/ HID yet. However last night I did see a big charter tour bus w/ HID projectors. They were mounted down low, though, and I was like whoa cool. The sharp cutoff from the projector housing is great, too, because it puts the light on the ground where you need it and keeps it away from where you don't need it (up in the air).

Blue *** halogen ricer lights are way more annoying than a crisp HID beam. HID's own j00!

$375 shipped got me: 2002 Audi A6 Projectors, OEM ballasts, and D2S bulbs.

According to this site: http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/, it lists the 2002+ A6 Projectors as being Bi-xenon, that is awesome. But my seller didn't confirm this with me. Just wondering.

HID's should be banned on all SUV's, especially if the kit is aftermarket. HID's in cars are hot and if aimed properly they shouldn't pose a problem to anyone but the haters.

the car i drove around in was an audi a6. and the halogen light spectrum to me looks better than the hid. personal preference and i like the way it doesn't cast shadows everywhere.

The only time I've ever been bothered by a car with HID's is when they crest a hill to where they have higher positioning and the right angle, enabling the beam to hit you straight in the eyes at an angle that produces the most annoying glare.

It happened to me once when I was driving west and a TT crested a gentle hill at around the time of dusk where all of my lights where still washed out by the setting sun. I'd never been so blinded before.

i think they should be banned too. I mean c'mon, the street lights are bright enough to drive without your headlights on for christ's sake. before someone says "but you've never driven a car with HIDs before" again, i don't really care because when i'm in my car, i'm the one that has to see the glare, not the bandwagon jumping guy behind the wheel who's trying to show off his $500 light bulbs. i can't even drive in front of my friend's bmw 3-series at night and his came with it stock.

What "they" need to do is ban some of the freaking eye-sore body kits that are made now.
