Default Too VTEC or Not to VTEC

So Im trying to decide which motor I want to swap into my 94 Delsol Si.
I have $2500 and looking. Do I want a B16a or a B18b. Is the VTEC of the B16 better then the torque of the B18b? or should I buy the B18b and VTEC it a year or two from now?

Looking to hear Personal experiences!!

You are posed with the exact same dilema as I was. I will tell you my solution.

Get the b16a for now. You will have an awesome flowing head, a reliable motor, high redline, VTEC power, a good ECU, and a sweet closed geared tranny. If the torque is not enough for you, plan on b20'n it later. This will give you about 20ft/lbs more torque than the b18b, but will still give monsterous amounts of power

I was thinking the same thing, but Im not sure I want that big of a motor in my car. I like the B16, but then again, I wouldnt mind a LS/VTEC. I know if I get the LS now, Ill want the VTEC soon after. B20/Vtec does not have enough AM support as a Ls/Vtec either. Im not looking for killer motor, just mid to high 13s

The b20/vtec has TONS of aftermarket support! What it doesn't have is OEM support. For example, you cannot swap CTR/ITR pistons into a b20/vtec like you could in an LS/VTEC. But you COULD swap JE 10.5:1 pistons into a b20/vtec. Just think, you get the awesome HP from having a VTEC head with the choice of upgrading to ITR manifolds and such, CTR cams, ITR cams, Skunk2 valvetrain stuff, CAI's, everything! If you are looking for a 13s car, aftermarket support is not a problem. Anything that YOU need, you can get aftermarket for a b20/vtec. Plus who couldn't use more torque. You can always use more torque.

I think you will be dissapointed in the B16A. I agree that it does make decent power and has killer top end, but considering the weight of a Del Sol, I would want a larger displacement block from the start. I understand that the Del Sol VTEC's came with a B16A3, but the 99-00 Si's have the B16A2 and people still yank them out for a bigger block. If you can't save a little more and buy a B18C1 swap. I would go with the LS. Later on you can build an LSVTEC or boost it

LOL Ok ok point taken. Money is the big issue, otherwise I would be buying a built B20/VTEC with turbo, tuned & install from http://www.ImportBuilders.com (14k OMG!!)
I dont want to spend more then 3500 for the swap.

www.osakajdmmotors.com has 2nd gen b16a's for like $1950 i think. You can get a JDM b20 from www.jdmhondaparts.com for about $700. Figure in about $500 shipping for both parts and you are still under the $3500 mark. You will need a few misc. parts, but should still come out under $3500

well the b16a will beat a b18b in a 1320 race. but i dislike vtec so i went with a b18b i think you should look in a b18c and try and ride in cars with swaps. i rode in my buddies 4 door with a b16 and i wasnt impressed at all. now it should technically be faster then a b18b motor but you have to rev it up to vtec to get power i don't like that **** b18b you have decent power from start to finsh its all about personal likes though

First figure out if your going forced induction or not. If not I would recommend the b18c. You already have a 1.6 liter in there right now you want another one? IF you are going to go forced induction then their is a thread going on in the forced induction forum check it out.

My friend just got his VTEC Lude and loves it, loves the vtec, but then again he had a 4-cyl Probe. Then my friend turboed his B18b and loves it. I want to go vtec and will probably do a B16, but that will be a long time from now.
