Default Yet another "oil change" question

Just wondering if anyone knows why cars like (newer) Mercedes and Porsche change their oil once a year using Mobil1? I'm asking because i just switched to Mobil1 and i was told that i could change the oil around 6,000 miles .

synthetic oil is more resistant to breaking down. BMW recommends changing every 10K (and under their included maintenance plan, they won't change it before that). the most important thing isn't necessarily changing the oil, it's changing the filter. you can go quite a long time on the same oil as long as you keep fresh filters on the car to remove the particles out of it.

the myth of every 3,000 miles is long gone....granted changing it more often is safer, most cars nowadays have higher limits than that.

doesn't hurt to be on the safe side though

The big problem with extended service intervals, in terms of your Honda, is the unchecked oil level. Most Hnda motors consume a good bit of oil when you drive them hard, and I've seen too many people wo are over a quart down and having VTEC engagement problems simply because they think that you can go 5-10k between oil changes. This is technically true, but you should still change the filter every 5k IMO and CHECK THE OIL LEVEL often. Out of sight, out of mind, and too many people forget to check their oil level unless they are changing it.

Quite right. I was very surprised at how much oil my catch can collected from just one week. One of these days I'll quantify the volume per mi.
