Default RSX Type-S Owners: Missed Shifts

Hey how is everyone doin in this forum. Anyway i was wondering what is up with that whole thing that is going around with the Type-S's missing their shifts. Has this happend to anyone out there? Has anyone on blown their K20? I am tring to buy a Type-S as my first car so i will basically be learning how to drive the 6-speed. I have been learning on my friends 01 Civic Ex , 99 SI , Z3 , and 02 SI . Long story short i just want to know if it happens and if it does how often.

I have had my Type-s since they came out. No mis-shifts in 35k kms on it. This was my first manual trasmission care though, so I may just be acustemed to this car. Get a short shifter if you want, even though that may sound odd, I was told that the gears are actually harder to mis-shift in. BUT anyways, if you drive correclty, there is no need to worry.

I did the same 3rd to 2nd at 8000rpm and the dealer told me the ecu said 9191rpm@69mph is what it did when the engine died, my dealer covered it under good will and if I would of had to pay it would have been $8833.43 .....a hurtpiece to say the least.

Shift lightly, the syncros will guide ur shift, you never need to shift with force, you can also practice different methods of shifting, i found a website once that demonstrated different grips on the shifter which minimized misshifting during aggressive driving, again, they always stressed to let the gear go in to place with out force...i think youll be fine with the typeS especially since ur aware of its closely spaced gears.

Driver error. Sometimes due to over excitement and usually with gripping the shifter with a pistol grip type hold. Use your hand in a flat position and let your finger tips do the work. This isn't a GM shifter.

Like he said, dont try to force it, just let it slide naturally into the next gear. Also try using this method of shifting.

i have mis shifted twice in this car, but this occured when i was barly learning to drive a standard, so it didn't even go above 4 k after the mis shift ;p... The shift gates in this car are really really close so you have to be very careful. Oh ya guide the shifter don't force it, when you force it you might hear a grind in 2nd and 3rd due to the syncros, and it doesn't sound or feel too pleasant

I blew my RSX (basemodel) mishifting from 5th -> Reverse When I bought my car it was used for a few months, and the previous owner had upgraded the shift **** to a s2000 ****. OK, sweet titantium but I was completely new to acuras and I thought the stupid thing had a 6th gear, so when i went from top right to bottom right going at 60 whamoo
Since Acura sold me the car w/ that **** they were liable and they fixed it under warranty.

in my experience in the s use your fingers to shift because the shifter is that smooth do not force it, how do you shift from 3rd to 2nd boggles me its straight down!

I used to work at an Acura dealership and this kid had his brand new RSX Typw S towed in because the motor just died while driving... Uh huh, right ... So they get the car apart and he's bent a butt load of valves and even put a rod through the block ... So they checked the ecu to see the revs and found it to be about 10,000 in second I believe... They told him what they found and he confessed that his friend was driving it and went to downshift from 6th to 4th to race someone... When he pulled it out of 6th, the shifter automatically centers itself for a str8 back shift to fourth but he pulled over to the left and hit second and popped the clutch... Whabam!!!... Blown motor, not covered by acura because of driver neglect... Sad sad story...

Isnt there a safety mechanism that prevents you from doing that?
I mean, damn, you must of really screwed up to pull that off.

There is indeed a reverse lockout for 5->R . My dad tried to shift 5th to reverse and it didn't let him thank god.

PS: He's used to his 6spds.

LOL. I was thinking this the whole time when I was driving my brothers type R. I am so relaxed with my 6 speed tranny, that while I was driving his R I kept telling myself " It only has 5 gears, it only has 5 gears". LOL. I guess when you get used to something it's hard to try something different.
And yes I to am part of the misshift club, but I caught the gear and over stretched a valve and " supposible" Acura mechanics fixed the problem and I would have nothing to worry about. That same day about three hours later leaving a gas station I took 1st gear to 7900 and shifted to 2nd and BOOOMMM POOOF!!!.. Engine died. they tried to claim I misshifted, but I then asked them how I would misshift going from 1-2.. they then covered the motor and 1 month and 28 days later my baby was returned from surgery..lol.. All I can say is becareful guys, and good luck.

Mando- who has been gone for a while due to his laptop dying.

hey mando

just curious, how did you know you stretched a valve? (the idle is normal and the engine sounds the same) sad to say i have misshifted about 3 times in my Type S...whatever people might try to say about the tranny, it's always driver error...all 3 times i caught second gear from the top of 3rd into 4th but catching 2nd instead...

i have changed the way i shift since then, after the 3rd time i became real paranoid about shifting from 3rd gear to 4th...i learned to just place your palm on the shifter and let it do it's job, don't force the shifter into gear...

i did a compression test myself about a month ago... cylinder #1 (at WOT)185psi, cylinder #2 181psi, cylinder #3 178psi, and cylinder #4 189psi...#2 and #3 seem a little low...my car has about 5,800 miles on it, maybe the rings aren't completely seated yet which might account for the low compression in #2 and #3...late

I misshifted and my dumb *** went from 3rd to second at redline, but
I caught it at 87oo and the car was fine till the next day when I was about to leave for work. It was vibrating hard and making a weird noise. That is what the techs told me about my car that I had over stretched a valve and that they repaired it with no problems, hell they even said this was common with my car and had a few other type S's with the same problems. They told me it was in perfect condition and no problems would occur. They were wrong and
I was without a car for 1 month and 28 days.

some dealers are more lient than others. I told the dealer straight out I mis-shifted and it was covered under good will. If one wont cover it, just tow it to somewhere that will

They were wrong and I was without a car for 1 month and 28 days.
damn bro, was your dealer backed up? My whole engine and other things were replaced and it only took my dealer 10 days.

I had to fight them for a good month about the whole matter. They tried to claim I mis-shifted after they repaired the engine the first place. They even told me that the engine was in tip top condition when I went to pick it up. After it blew ( supposible after they repaired the over stretched valve) they tried to say I mis-shifted, which was complete bullshit figuring I was going from 1st--> 2nd. They did not even want to touch my car and were saying I would have to pay 9ooo.oo.But after I mentioned the word lawyer and got my uncle involved they soon changed thier tone of voice and checked the motor out and checked the ecu to find out I was telling the truth about up shifting when this incident happened. It was hell not having my car. I had the car for 2 weeks before it blew, then went without the car for almost 2 months. They had me stuck in a ford escort and taurus.. oh god... I abused the **** out of those cars. hahahhah..

how come so many of you got engines replaced for free from the dealer when it was your fault on the misshift?
