Default Foolish n00b question

I'm probably gonna sound like a n00b for sayin' this, but is there a difference between AWD and 4WD? I see some cars that say they have AWD and others that say 4WD. I was unsure if there's a difference between the two

AWD is all wheel drive, while the 4WD is 4 wheels drive.

basically in most instances the AWD is found in cars/small trucks where for most driving conditions your only powering the front. and when slipping occurs the power is added to the rear.

4wd on the other hand is turned on with a transfer case of some sort. like in SUVs or pickup trucks.
