you could put gears on the stock cams, but I doubt you will be able to gain very much power, if any. You could probably smooth out the curve but thats about it.

I'm using spoon camgears on my stock cams, along with a VAFC for fuel tuning and I saw some good power gains and a smoother curve, but nothing drastic. I'm happy with the setup. So to answer your question, yes you'll gain some power and yes it's safe, just make sure to dyno tune, don't guess

I gained some good all-round power on stock cams with cam gear and VAFC tuning.

You made 186 HP to the wheels with stock cams? What is your setup?

You ever seen a dyno plot and noticed the nasty spike when VTEC engages? You try and smooth that spike out to make a more suitable power band across the whole RPM range and thus making a smoother transition from low to high lobes. If you look at a JDM motor dyno plot usually there is no spike at all.

Is your fuel PSI with the hose on or off the FPR?

Nice SurferX. I'm going to try to get maybe 190 with my stock cam maybe next year.

I hope I can come close to that....interesting settings too.

Did you try retarding the intake a bit and advancing the exhaust at all? Mkae a little more peak hp but sacrifice a little low end....

What header/exhaust setup was the 186 hit with?

With ITR cams, you can definately see small gains with cam gears. If you have GSR or B16 cams, don't bother.

Advancing intake & retarding exaust will wide lobe separation angle reducing overlap.
So you'll have less top power and more midrange.

The reverse is true. Overlap is when both the exhaust and intake valves are open. The exhaust valves are closing at the end of the exhaust stroke/beginning of the intake stroke. The intake valves are opening. By retarding the exhaust cam , the exhaust valves close later, spend more time open with the intake valves. More overlap also occurs when you advance the intake cam. The intake valves open sooner, and spend more time open at the same time as the exhaust valves.

The above illustration should be helpful. Note:Honda B-series engine rotate counerclockwise.

Nice pic.....I have my intake cam retarded -1 degree and my exhaust advanced +3 degrees....smoother up top but will have to verify it on the dyno....with a low rev limit though I make more mid range than peak by playing with the cam gears.
