Default Sorta OT: Making a JDM car street legal...

Does anyone know how to? That is, in the state of California. I've seen some R32 Skyline's running around - at least three of them - in the So Cal area, and they're all right hand drive. Just curiousity...anyone try making a JDM ITR street legal?

Well the Skylines are imported by Motorex. They are a company that specializes importation and legalizing Skylines. You have to first import a few of them just for the goverment to crash test and do some smog tests. It becomes very expensive. Also you have to convert it to us specs. That means getting new glass, any safety equiment that is required is installed, and various other little things to meet emissions. That is why Motorex charges double the value of the car when it comes over to cover thier losses when they had to sacrfice a few Skylines and also to do the US legal conversion on every Skyline. I did see a post awhile back about a guy in northern california that said he could do it for cheap. I think he just switch the vins to a US vin and register it as a USDM car. Btw that is illegal to do.

which parts you need to replace with DOT parts depends on which car.

from what i know, jdm itr requires brake lines, windshield/window, 3rd brake light (in certain states, FL), front end bumper rebar and ignition retarding or cat replacement for emissions purposes (in certain states, not FL)

disclaimer: I have NOT done this personally, but I have spoken to a few individuals who have, and explained why.
