NA Gods help please
Hi, I had a few questions for all you N/A gods out there, cuz I'm relatively uneducated in this field. Please don't tell me to go to po.com or rice.com or something...sometimes, you guys act like straight up bullies. Anyways here are the questions, and thanks in advance.
How and what is the proper way to go about increasing an H22A redline? Do you have to do something to the rev limiter? valve springs? why change the valve springs for redline?- I don't know much about this subject FYI.
Also, in increasing compression for more power, why is it that not many choose to just get a thinner head gasket, rather than going through all the trouble with pistons/etc? Is there something wrong/dangerous with this method? On stock internals, what would be a relatively safe street compression to run on the H22A, 11? 11.5?
In addition, how much does the Type S pistons increase compression if any, and would I have to get new rods or other parts?
Also, what are valve retainers? and how does changing the size or polishing the valves increase power if any?

You have tooooo many questions for people to answer here bud. Try a search and you will find answers to most of the questions that you have. Also look on the net for H22 headwork and you will find the answers your looking for.
Upgrade your ECU for a higher redline. You should have all of the bolt-ons available + Vafc as a minimum to help w/HP. Cams & Upgraded valvetrain for the increased RPMs.

yea, i know theres a lot of questions, but those have been on my mind for a long time now... thanks to anyone that answers even one of em
increase redline, needs tougher rods or rod bolts, bearing clearances to spec, valve springs and retainers and good valves.. along with the ecu... but you can`t increase a redline and expect power.. so you add cams to make power beyond the redline because h22a cams fall shortly after 7000rpm so adding more redline won`t yeild any positve results...
Ques 1:Yes you will need to have the computer modified to increase redline, but doing only that will not help.Valve springs would be recommended depending on how far over stock redline you want to go.
Ques 2:Compression,you will only be able to raise it a few tenths with a head gasket hence the reason we go through th trouble of rebuilding (plus the many other benefits)general rule is a 7% HP increase for every point of compression.
Pt 2.i run 11.0 comp every day on pump gas with no problems and have heard of guys running 12.0 (we have 93 octane gas available) which is getting to the "unsafe" point.
Ques 3:I believe the type s pistons are 10.5 (someone correct me if i am wrong please).
Ques 4.valve retainers are exactly what they say.i need a visual to tell you so ill leave it at that.Bigger valves increase the amount of air that is pulled into and pushed out of the cylinder, more air=more power.
I hope this answered some of your questions.

why change the valve springs for redline?
ok here goes....first off, dont even think about getting any cams or anything like that...they will only yeild good result if you build the bottom end up ie 11.5 to 1 compression or so...also to whoever said h22s stop making power at 7, i beg t differ, if u have adjustable cam gears, you can shift the power around, and you can make more power up top, also getting a diff ecu definately helps, in my personal opinion, all the p13 ecu are crap, ive switched to a p28 thats been chipped to gsr mugen specs, and i shift at 7900 to 8k when i race...the main thing u have too look at is what u really want..how fast do u wanna go, if your gonna be happy with low 14s or high 13s..you dont ever have to open your motor up to reach that, just getting the basic bolt ons will get you there with tuning...hell on slciks you can reach lower 13s without ever opening up the motor...i see people all the time here wheere i live getting stage 2 cams ect ect...and thier cars run like ***...never make much power, it amazes me, im a firm believer in sticking with the OE honda parts...and if u really wanna go faster than 13s, nitrous is an easy solution, and is safe no matter what anyone tells you, so long as u have it set up properly, diff plugs, timing everything must be setup...and anything beyond that you might as well look at are more powerful RWD car to start with...hope this helps you, its a shame to see so many people waste thier money on hype, and i believe all these cams and such are that, and until the day someone builds an h series motor with cams and shows me something, ill stick with the way it is...also do research before u buy parts, for instance if your gonna buy a header, do not get a DC...get a greddy SS...it makes more power all around, and if you look closely, all the fastest prelude on the boards are using it...good luck
