What is this mystery item in my engine bay?
Well I decided since my AC doesn't work for **** I would take out the annoying lines. So I got some sweet locking wrenches at sears and came back. I got the lines out but had to remove this black cylinder. Not a big deal. But I was wondering what it was? It says PCV on this one part so I take it this is the Positive Crankcase Ventilation thing? Can anyone tell me what it does really. I heard it helps to replace it or some parts of it cuz they wear out. So just some info would be cool, thanks...

Yep, that's your charcol canister. When I bought my civic, it was missing, so I had to buy another ******* one. But I got one that had like 35k miles on it for dirt cheap
What does it do? The tubes/wires going into it look insulated so I thought they had to do with the electrical system or something.

cars today have a sealed gasket tank. as opposed to a vented tank. when the tank gets warm the gas vapors expand and need to be vented. but its not friendly to the environment to have the hydrocarbons(HC) released in the air. so the charcoal cansister is a storage tank for the HC until you start up your car. then vacuum from the intake manifold sucks out the HC vapors and burns them in the engine. it does not hurt engine performance. just might like 1 pound to your car.

I don't plan to take it out. But I mean if I can not kill the environment then leave it in. Plus it will help when emissions time rolls around.
Yea thats for emissions, what it does is through a hose from the gas tank(the red one not braided)feeds the canister fuel tank vapors which are stored in the canister and when you are cruising on the highway the ecu tells the evap purge canister solenoid to open which allows vacum to the small black hose (on top of can) to open the valve (on top) which feeds the throttle body through the red hose(the braided one) and reburns excess fuel tank vapors stored in the can for for efficient fuel usage.

word to the wise: several states have emissions laws that require the presence of a charcoal canister, so if you have removed yours, be prepared to re-install it when it comes time for emissions. for you lazy people, simply attaching the canister with a couple blind hoses usually works just fine.
You think that engine bay looks scary? EHHE! Wait till you see my crx's engine bay

Very carefully.... one piece at a time.
I was actually about to remove my turbo manidolf recently without removing the DP, or the turbo, or the engine from my car.
It was a neat trick, really.
