Default How to find what gear the car is in?

Is there a way to dertimine what gear a M/T car is in electronicly? I see on the hondata logger that there is a window for "gear", how does hondata get that reading?
I have looked at the ECU pinouts and found nothing on there that looks like what i am looking for.
