gear grinding while ABS is engaging
oh boy!! wintertime is here, and that means a lot of slipping and sliding everywhere.
anyways, i've been noticing that my gears sometimes grind while downshifting whenever my ABS is engaging. for instance, it will grind while downshifting into 2nd if i'm slowing down for a stop-sign and hit a patch of ice.
is this normal, or is it something that should be looked at??

mine has done that a few times this winter season.....i know brakes are cheaper, but for example: i downshift to 2nd as i apply the brakes when turning a street corner. that's when it has grinded on me a bit before.
Dont downshift.
Use the brakes. Tranny is alot more expensive to fix, than replacing brake pads.

the tranny will grind (with the clutch in while shifting, of course) only if the ABS comes on due to ice.
edit: god, i can't type

are you sure it's your tranny and not ur brakes, b/c its normal for abs brakes to make some noise but not the tranny, if it is the tranny then have it looked at before it gets worse.
i'm aware of the noise and pedal feel from the ABS engaging....the grinding is kind of a strange beast in the fact that it sounds a bit different than the normal high-speed "clacking" sound. i'm assuming it's grinding, because i can feel a strange feeling in the shifter.
wtf is going on?? my tranny NEVER grinds in any other circumstance....only when the ABS is operating at the moment of downshifts.

the same thing happens to me....i think what it's with the sychros and the two wheels spinning at different speeds because the ABS slowing one wheel more than the other....that's what i think, could be total BS too...
just don't shift until you are completely stopped, that's what i do.
you're from fargo? i'm from detroit lakes....shitty roads eh?

well, i think that the "two wheels spinning at different speeds" idea is probably correct. i went out and tried to get my car to repeat the symptoms, and it seems to only do it when one of the wheels loses traction.
to me for trying to get my gears to grind
and yes, the roads in fargo suck.
