Default poor man's itr or the real thing? (long rant)

ok, so i've done the b16 thing, doen the ls/vtec thing and now i must say i enjoyed the b16 thoroughly, especially given the fact that i could treat it like absolute dirt and rev the **** out of it knowing that 478 bucks later i could have another if i smoked it. ls/vtec on the other hand was an expensive nightmare, and while i did like its power, i hated having to pay so much. so now i am thinking to TRY to get ahold of an itr longblock and leave it bone stock internally, or try to pice together my own little poor mans itr (gsr bottom end and pr3 head for those of you who don't know). if i was to go with the latter choice i would of course want to tear it down and rebuild it, but when you start factoring in things like new bearings, bolts, pistons rings, machine work and so forth it starts getting expensive. not to mention a decent valvetrain for a pr3 head runs well over 1k with cams. also, i feel like i would be opening up a can of worms (literally) by having the motor apart and being tempted to go crazy with aftermarket internals. ugh, i want to have a fast b series again, but i am havign a hard time deciding where to draw the line. **** it, mayeb i'll just stick to my b16's. any ideas?

so far i come up with rough estimate of 2835 for the poor mans itr, thats with all new internals, bearings, bolts, studs (arp) water pump, timing belt, itr skunk 2 full valvetrain, ctr cams and pistons with rings. that includes machine work. that also inlcudes the purchase of a pr3 longblock for the donor head and an itr intake mani as well. any thoughts on this setup compared to a straight itr? (97,98 spec jdm)

96 spec ITR long blocks go for 3100. 98 spec i think go for 3700

You pretty much have everything but 1.8L

You asking what you should do. You have a better build motor for less then an ITR. I'm confused on what the problem still is. Seems like a no brainer to me.

ya, but its very narrow margin, and i almost wonder if a factory-built motor would perform better than any motor i would build. not to mention how much work i'd be saving myself.

i dont know sh*t. but i think a realy ITR would be very ******* nice. but if you look at the price, i would rather have a gsr block with a built head for less the money. so i would say go with the poor mans ITR motor. that sounds very nice to me.

Well it looks to be about a $1000 difference +/- some. With that extra money left over. Why not build the head up more? and It would for sure be a better motor then a ITR

I am build what you are thinking of doing. Pr3 head mild PnP CTR cams, ITR valve springs and Skunk retainers. Skunk manifold, obx cam gears, and 4-1 header. The bottom end is a 95 GSR with CTR .25 over pistons, shot peened rod w/arp bolts, new bearings, and everything is balanced.
Top end $1300
Bottom end $1865
