Default Dyno: LS w/ 403's

I know a few of you guys were interested in what type of numbers the Crower 403 cams made in an LS. I finally got them put in this weekend. Here are the results:

150 whp @ 6500 rpms
125 lb/ft tq @ 5300 rpms

[RED]Baseline Run = aem cai, comptech header, 2.25" carsound cat, comptech exhaust = 132 whp, 121 tq
[BLUE]Dyno Run 007 = same setup as above + Crower 403 cams, Crower valve springs, B&M fpr set at 48psi, aem cam gears (intake +1, exhaust -1), SAFC

Here is a dyno plot of the cams untuned vs. tuned

[BLUE]Baseline Run-untuned = i/h/c/e, Crower 403's, Crower valve springs, B&M fpr set at 48 psi, timing at 16 degrees, aem cam gears (0,0) = 148 whp, 123 tq
[RED]Final Run-tuned = same setup as above except: aem cam gears (intake +1, exhaust -1), SAFC tuning = 151 whp, 126 tq

The guy who tuned it did an excellent job with flatening out that nasy dip in the power curve that you can see from 4300-5200. It dyno'd pretty well, powerwise, without any tuning what so ever putting out 148 whp. The guys that worked at the shop said I could have hit 155whp, but I told the tuner that I was more interested in fixing that midrange dip than boosting the peak power and asked if he could start by widening the LSA, he said no prob. And that he could probably pull out more power in both the midrange and top end. [] He didn't mess with the fuel psi at all, widened the LSA once, and the rest of the runs he just kept toying with the SAFC to get better power.

My only beef with this mod, was/is the idle quality. When they initially started the car it sounded like poop!!! [] ~If these things are supposed to have a smoother idle than the 404's, I'd hate to see what those things idle like!~ They toyed with the fpr and safc to get it idle smoother, but its still a little lopey when I come to a stop.

Here is a dyno comparison of my car vs. a stock GSR:

he he.......

pretty nice numbers for an ls...your torque curve is a little unstable though...

anyone have experience with the crower turbo cams?

As I said before, very nice gains. Must make for a very fun daily driver, interested to see what 1/4 mile times you can pull off.

I love the GSR dyno compairison, hehehe

Nice numbers man.
about the loop idle... have them adjust the idle screw. have your idle sit at about 900-1,000 rpms. That is what jinxproof told be to do if you couldn't get a smooth idle. try it!

150whp is about 180hp to the crank! that's fairly good.

Cool, I'll try that. I've just been soo busy lately that I haven't had a chancer to tinker with it.

Would you mind posting your safc settings? I have an identical setup except my ecu is chipped running a pyr program.

142 to wheels sounds about right for a gsr..

My stock GS-R had 153 whp with only an AEM CAI... my dyno plot is in AEM's website... just fyi.

frosty:
I didn't get them since I don't rev past 7k

Brinks:
I'll post my settings but I don't know what good they would do for you to copy. You'll need to optimize them to your specific package.

VW:
Actually 140-145 whp is pretty standard for a bone stock GSR. Bolt on GSR's are 145-155.

good #'s.

i think with more compression and a better flowing header/exhaust u should see close to 165'ish.

Actually, Stock GS-R's average around 144wHP. OBD1 GS-R's produce a bit more.

I've seen OBD2 GS-R's puttin down 136wHP before too.

But who cares about stock numbers right? MOD the damn car and change its power!!

Yeah, I know, but your numbers will certainly be better than guesswork and I dont have tie time/money to go ti the dyno.

peak hp is only 25% of the story hear. Look at the HP throughout the powerband.

Exactly! I chose an engine package that would give me usable power. The car starts to make good power around 4500 rpms and really starts to zip after 5k. After I get out of first gear, my torque doesn't dip below 120 lb/ft until the last 300 rpms.

I'm not going to turn this into a pissing contest. That wasn't the intent of the post or my power curve versus that of a GSR, rather it was to show LS owners that you don't need a vtec head to make decent power. If you plan out your engine package w/ the proper components you can run with (or in my case outrun) the stock-mildly modded b18c1 guys.

Thanks.

Increased compression would definitely help this setup. I thinkered with the idea of adding high compression pistons (b16a slugs) but it was just WAY too expensive for me. I'm actually running below stock CR due to these cams. Bringing the CR up would definitely allow me to see more power.

Better flowing header and exhaust? The header has stepped tubing w/ 2" exit --> high flow 2.25" Carsound cat --> mandrell bent 2.25" exhaust with a straight thru muffler. I'm not sure how I could make it flow better??? Bigger diameter tubes will kill my flow velocity. The 2" header coupled with 2.25" piping from the header back is more than adaquate for a 150whp LS.

Damn those are very nice #'s. I have been thinking of getting the same cams but I don't know if I could put up with the lopey idle. Where and how much did you get your cams from?
