Default Flywheel or lightweight rims?

I am debating whether i should get a flywheel first or some 16 inch rota slipstream for my 96 GSR. Im leaning more on the flywheel because I am going to the Philippines this March or April and I can get the slipstreams for 300 or less for the whole set, but i need your guy's opinions. I recently installed the ACT hdss and i want to know which one would make the most difference. BTW i have the 17 inch gunmetal with polish lip Rota Stage 5 which i bought in the Philippines about 2 years ago.

The rims will give you a more noticeable power/acceleration increase, while the flywheel will more drastically affect your launch and clutch engagement.

Even the heaviest Rota 17" weighs 16.5 lbs per rim.... a typical 17 weighs about 20+lbs. The heaviest rota would still save you about 7lbs at the drive wheels, while a lightweight flywheel would be about 10lbs.... BUT, rims are sooo much easier to install...heh heh heh.

The light weight rims will also payoff in quicker suspension response (bound and travel) and reduces your unsprung weight. I'd say go with a 15" slipstream (what, 13.5lbs ?) and save over 13 lbs at the wheels and shorten your gearing some.

If you can get the rims in the PI for cheaper later, get the flywheel.

Since you are N/A I'd go for an ITR flywheel. It's only a few pounds lighter but it makes a huge difference when you rev the engine up. Acceleration seems to be a bit better as well. Plus, it's cheaper than an aluminum flywheel.

And as a general rule of thumb, for a basically stock engine, you don't want to get a flywheel less than 12lbs. Remember that if you get a real light flywheel, your revs will also drop a lit more quickly when you shift.

Maybe instead of rims, you may consider cams.

Good luck!

Not really. I've got the comptech 8.75lb Chromoly wheel and it is totally streetable. I did not even have to change my shifting habits after I put it in. True the revs do drop faster, but unless you shift really really slow it's not an issue.

In essence it's true, but from a budget standpoint, the R flywheel should be fine for most applications.

My question would be, is there that much of a performance gain with that light of a flywheel on a GSR with basic bolt ons?

A lightened flywheel definatley increases throttle response and slightly improves acceleration. But I agree, from a budget standpoint an ITR flywheel is probably sufficient.

The budget is not an issue. My plan in the future is to get some Skunk 2 Stg.1, flywheel, and the lightweight rims, I just cant get them all at once so im trying to decide which to get first. Installing is not an issue either because me and my dad can work on it, since he is a mechanic. I heard good stuff about flywheel but from what u guys are telling me, they dont make a lot of difference on a Stock GSR with boltons. Can anyone ellaborate this? And if i were to get rims, i will get the 16 inch slipstreams (13.5 lbs) because it looks way better than the 15 inch (12 lbs) and the only difference is 1.5 lbs.

Nope don't get me wrong...I love my lightweight flywheel but just don't expect to see any gains on the dyno with this mod.

As for the rims it dpnds on what you are looking to accomplish. If you're going for all out performance go for the 15's. If you want a compromise btn looks and performance go for the 16's.

Wait... how heavy are the Stock 98+ GS-R rims?
