How do I know if the dizzy cap is sparking on exhaust instead of compression?
(fixhondas)
This is from an IM from fixhondas. I'm worried I may have mounted the rotor wrong because I've already burned up one cap and coil...but I don't know how to check if it's on the right way? Any help is greatly appreciated

The shaft in your distributor is round, with the screw removed the rotor can turn freely on the shaft. The hole for the screw sometimes is drilled all the way through the shaft. When the hole is all the way through the shaft you can remove the screw, rotate the rotor on the shaft 180 degrees and reinstall the screw- then you will be sparking on exhaust instead of compression. This is just to let you know it is possible.

set piston one to TDC...or check the crank. red mark lined up on d16a6. then take the cap off, make sure the rotor is pointed at the no. 1 plug wire. no. 1 cylinder should be on the far drivers side.

You shouldnt be able to install the rotor backwards.
The shaft is actually shaped like this: [)

if the engine timing has been messed up it is possible to have the rotor on 180 degrees opposite....causing a spark on the exhaust...but you're car wouldnt run. maybe your coil is to powerful?
