What the hell makes this sound? This happened on my last car too.
When I let the clutch out, I hear a clunk sound. A hollow sounding "clunk."
For a fact, I know it's not:
suspension
mounts
brake system
axles
steering column
So let's rule that stuff out, I would have figured it out already if it was those. This sound comes from my engine/tranny.
Anyways, when I let the clutch out and it grabs, it makes the clunk sound. No one has ever figured it out. I've had people tell me it's the throwout bearing.. but I don't understand how that would make a sound.
I bet some of you can make this sound with your B18's... all you have to do is let the clutch out when stopped (not enough to kill it), and don't rev it high, then listen for that light clunk sound coming from the clutch/tranny area. You can do it over and over (depending on how bad it is). Mine is pretty mild.. but when I had my 98 Integra (LS), it was terrible. It made the sound when I shifted gears too.
Could there be some kind of play along my drivetrain somewhere that could cause this? Could the clutch engagement cause this? Is it the crankshaft? Thrust bearing? Something!!!
I'm beginning to think that the way I drive over a period of time causes this.
I'll be suprised if anyone else can just tell me what it is that makes this sound. Please help me figure it out...

I've had the same sound for as long as I can remember. After my 15K service, in which they adjust the clutch, the sound went away for a little bit and then came back. I then had my clutch, t/o bearing, pressure plate replaced under warranty with 16K miles on the car and the sound went away for a bit, only to come back. With 35,300 miles, I the same things mentioned above, in addition to a flywheel, replaced under warranty. I've been on the new clutch for 700 miles. All was well until the past couple of days where I'm starting to notice the sound again. It comes and goes and just as long as the car drives fine, then I not worrying too much about it.
When I slam on my brakes I hear a loud clunk coming from my front suspension.
Anyways, I think this is probably something all integras have, I've also heard it on a friends GSR. Although some people probably make it worse by clutch dumping or just driving a little bit different than others. Although I think I drive just fine..
My g/f's Si makes the sound too, but it's really really light..
What the **** does it? It's like an engagement sound, but it's a rough clunk.
Damn and to think I was going crazy. Now I feel better. I was wondering the same thing. Keep the questions and answers coming please
. I need to find out why that sound keeps coming.

I'd like to know too.
Although I dont have an ITR, I do get that "clunk" thingy on my hybrid. Usually occurs when the car is on an uneven surface. Like when backing out on driveway diagonally and the last tire is still on the driveway (compressed suspension). When I slowly let go of the clutch to move forward, I get a "clunk".
Its not the clutch throw-out bearing or the clutch because I just replaced that with new ones.
Its drving me nuts and I cant figure out what it is.
My theory is its the motor twisting on the engine mounts.

this is an old thread, but i need an answer, when i engage, i hear a metallic clank, and just today i went around a corned semi quickly and the same thing happened, i am running an open DP and i can hear it over that, help!
^ Could be that was well. Come to think about it, my car hasn't made that clunk since replacing my motor mounts in November.
heard it in my R as well, have no idea where's it coming from. on a side note my friend's 02 accord makes the same noise. but was gone when he swapped coilovers, so I am thinking maybe its coming from the bolts of the LCA?
