Default Knock sensor on ls-vtec question?

I have a 88' dx and I currently have a b18a in it but I have every thing I need to do ls vtec except the knock sensor. The question is can I run vtec with out the sensor? My friend did this for about 30 min when he had his old ls vtec motor. Will it hurt anything to do this?

the car will run well, check engine light may come on. a friend did his with no knock sensor, and it was very quick. the he drilled one of his alternator bracket holes out a bit bigger and tapped it for the sensor, and the car ran much better. he definitely has one of the smoothest feeling cars i have ridden in, all parts are balanced, with high compression. the car feels like that was the way it was supposed to be from the factory.
