Default Is this really a good trade off...A "built" Si tranny for a "36 inch TV: info requested

A customer of mine own an AAMCO franchise...we get to talking and his wife wants
a new TV....so he pulls me aside and ask do I still need a tranny for my car ( I do).
He has a great idea trade a ( in his words) a "beefed up tranny" for a TV. Hmmm..let me think about it over a few days and get back to you on it.

Okay this is where i need you guys help.....

I know d*ck about trannys....just making that clear.
The TV is gonna cost me $2000.00 . What is a rebuilt /new tranny "built" worth?
What basically qualifies as a "built"/performance tranny? I really dont want to come out on the short end of the stick so to speak...so I need you guys help.

tranny is an SI tranny ( or should I go for a B-series? )
with installation and warranty.
TV is a "36 Sony XBR Wega with matching stand ( new)

Any insight would be welcome....TIA

Chuck

you'd have to be insane to trade a $2000 tv for a ~$200 tranny ....

as for the built thing, i guess all you can really do it put in some better synchros, different final drive, some type of lsd or something, but thats not even close to 2grand..

yup I can put together a SI tranny with a custom final drive, LSD and even polish it for you and it would cost way less than a $2000 TV

not a good deal..

Keep the TV. IMO you can get a tranny in good shape for 200ish and probably get it rebuilt for hella lot less then 2k. BTW I'll trade you a new RCA 36'' for your Wega jk

i have to agree with the others, a tranny will only cost you $200 and thats only an average price. you can order a complete b16 swap for $1400 shipped.

Thanks guys....I feel like a noobie ( you cant know every thing) plus the deal just didnt "feel" right...he offered the tranny up so real quick.

So really how much would a tranny, with gearing,LSD and all the fun stuff to put the power to the pavement run me? For cost effectiveness im going with either a ZC or D16( with a little work possible..)

can you say STROKED....hmm still researching that one.

thanks again.

I love this stuff.......(oops )

http://www.optauto.com has some great deals on parts and they offer lsd's, as far as gearing i would just toss a lsd into a stock si or zc tranny, which ever one you decide on.

Hey Chuck, if you want to drive to the Twin Cities or willing to pay for shipping, I WILL have a SI tranny soon. I have a customer that owns a SI hatchback and is coming in for a B16 swap.

I usually "test" drive the engine and tranny first before I pull it out and if Im interested, I'll offer to take it off the customers hands and minus some money off the B series swap.

I've sold every single D-series SI tranny that has come to my shop. It nice to be able to "test" them first before I buy.

If the customer blew out his stock motor, obviously there is no way to "test" his D-series tranny before I do the B-series swap. I would just have to take the customers word for it on the condition. I usually take note of the mileage, visual condition, and type of customer ( if he/she looks like the kind who Beats on their car )

I have a lot of D-series starters, alternators, mounts, distributors, etc.

No trannies at this time except for a HF and the SI that will be coming in.

Yeah I agree that $2000 is waay too much. You could buy a whole CRX Si in running condition for that. Keep your eyes open in the classifieds. I got a rebuilt (stock) Si transaxle and a pair of good Si seats for $250 from a guy who was parting out a wrecked CRX.

Thanks again guys for the assist ( tony I may take you up on that...whats shipping to zip 60563 ...though a road trip would be cool).

What many peeps dont know is that there is little margin ( profit) in video PERIOD.
Yes the TV was HD ready, but still....the customer took a shot ( cant blame him for trying though) he just wanted to save some bucks. Oh and for the record plasmas start at about $5000.00 and go up ( new). And if you buy one from a retailer get the warranty/performance package....Reason: They are like disposible lighters..there are no serviceable parts..when it dies that it...game over.
But I degress.

I asked because I have no clue what the cost of trannys are..( I know mobile gear and A/V stuff) and I just didnt want to get taken with a tree trunk. My goal is to build my car just a little better than stock...hey its better than therapy.

once again thanks for the help....really
