umm , um im not 100% on this so dont hold me to it and other people please correct me if im wrong ......first you are going to want to sand it with a fine grit paper , then apply an etching material and a sealer and then get a primer, as for as bubbling and stuff , there ARE ddifferent kinds of paint and you should match your paint to your primer..............i could very well be mixed up its been a while since auto body class

whatever base you paint your car with, use a primer with the same base. Enamel, Laquer, Urethane, etc. BTW this has been covered WAY too much and there is usefull sources in your public library and all over the net. If you are doing body work, sand down to the metal. If not, just sand through the clear coat. If no bodywork is being done, no need to go lower than 180 grit-although it will clog easily. Sand through the clear coat, then you have some options. You could either wet sand with a 600 then 1000, then apply paint, or you just spray some self etching primer, then a sealer, then your finish. You have many options and if you don't know where to start, then that's when you read a 200 page book on painting your car. There's too much to learn and you can never know enough.

I pretty much just re-worded what you said...lol. There's WAY too much to say about prep. You could just degrease the car and spray and it will come out clean. You could remove every last nut, put it on a rotissery and sandblast, dip, and paint, etc and make it look good. All depends on money, time, and how you want the end product to be. READ BOOKS!! You'll learn way more than the internet.

okay dude, I'll give you some Professional pointers here:

first of all use Wax and Grease Remover before you do anything. Use a lot of it, and use a lot of clean paper towels to prevent recontamination from using the same rag.

If your car is in perfect condition( No Dents or Dings) all you have to do is wetsand your car with 500-600 grit paper. Clean and degrease your car again right before painting. Use a primer sealer Just Right before painting it with color and clear. NEVER USE SPRAY CANS!!!!

If it has dents, fix those. then primer with an EPOXY PRIMER(unless your car has been painted with laquer). Block sand the primer with 400grit(wet) or 320(dry). Clean and degrease your car again right before painting. Use a primer sealer Just Right before painting it with color and clear. NEVER USE SPRAY CANS!!!!

goodluck.
